Belleville, ON, Oct. 12, 2022 –Last week, Loyalist strengthened its commitment to student mental health by launching the Fall Discovery Wellness Series as part of the annual Thrive Week activities hosted by the College’s Student Life team.

“Along with balancing the demands of schoolwork and daily stressors, we know many of our students are still dealing with mental health impacts of the pandemic,” said Loyalist College Acting President Mark Kirkpatrick. “Thrive Week was a way for our College community to come together and prioritize wellness and self-care without stigma or shame. We want our students to know they are not alone in their struggles and that many services are available for them on campus if they are struggling, including counselling and the College’s Wellness Discovery Series.”

The Wellness Discovery Series equips students with strategies to bolster mental health, build resiliency, and develop leadership skills. Workshops and certifications include Bystander Intervention, First Aid/CPR, Positive Space Training, and more. Additional sessions focusing on finding purpose, setting boundaries, and managing stress can help students build positive habits and life skills. Students who complete the Wellness Discovery Series learning pathway may be eligible for a certificate of recognition from the College.

“Wellness is not one-size-fits-all,” said Ron Byrne, Loyalist College Vice-President, Student Life and Leadership. “The Wellness Discovery Series is about building a safe and inclusive campus culture, in which our students can access a tool kit of wellness strategies and feel empowered to choose what works for them.”

In addition to the series, Loyalist College has many mental health support services for students, including free counselling services and the MySSP app, which offers 24/7 mental health support in multiple languages.
