Belleville, Ontario, March 12, 2020 – Loyalist College recognized 73 students during the Spring Awards Ceremony on March 3, in the Link Lounge. Made possible by 33 donors, including 21 endowed funds, a total of $41,700 was awarded, bringing the total value of awards presented this year through the Awards Office to more than $496,000.

“Congratulations to all of our award recipients,” said Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan, Loyalist College President & CEO. “I know you are busy with projects, exams, placements, and work-integrated learning, but I want to take this time to acknowledge your hard work, congratulate you on your achievements and wish you every success in the future. I also want to thank our donors for their generosity, and the Directors of The Loyalist College Foundation for their advocacy on behalf of the College and our students,” said President Vaughan.

Many of the awards made available throughout the year are provided by the endowment fund for student financial assistance, which is administered by The Loyalist College Foundation.

“We know how much this financial support means to you and the difference it makes in helping you work toward and achieve your goals,” said Margaret Werkhoven, Vice-Chair of The Loyalist College Foundation.

The College’s Student Leadership Awards were presented to Alicia Douglas, Student Government President and Hardik Arvindbhai Patel, Student Government Vice-President. Alicia is a second-year Community and Justice Services student who has displayed outstanding leadership through her involvement in numerous events and initiatives on campus. Hardik is a second-year Computer Networking and Technical Support student who is dedicated to fostering community and support for international students at the College.

The Student Leadership Awards were also presented to eight Varsity athletes involved in the Talk Tuesday Campaign for mental health. Talk Tuesday was created to increase conversation about mental health on campus. The campaign brings awareness to the support services Loyalist offers students. The eight award recipients acted as the faces of the campaign, using their positions as student leaders to start a dialogue, and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.

The Indigenous Post-Secondary Bursary was presented to 45 students during the 2019-2020 academic year. A ceremony was held in the Indigenous Resource Centre on March 6 to celebrate the recipients. This bursary is provided by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities for students who are of Indigenous ancestry, studying at the College. The total value presented was $25,150.

Additional awards are presented annually during Convocation in June and at the College’s Undergraduate Awards Ceremonies in the Fall. For more information about Loyalist College awards, bursaries and scholarships, please visit loyalistcollege.com.
