How you'll learn

Learn how to meet the needs of the television and digital media broadcast industry by applying industry-standard production equipment, using strategies that enhance work performance: 

  • Create engaging content and deliver it through any medium. 
  • Operate industry standard production equipment, in-studio and on location, to create television, video, and/or web content for multiple platforms. 
  • Keep current with the needs of the television and digital media broadcast industry using strategies that enhance work performance and guide professional development. 
  • Plan and prepare interviews, scripts, and reporting content for use in television, video, or digital media productions. 
  • Participate in marketing activities to promote independent productions and/or a station’s brand and products. 
  • Evaluate the artistic and technical success of filmmaking and multimedia projects to build a toolkit of strategies to meet client and audience needs. 
  • Conduct work safely in accordance with all applicable acts, regulations, legislation, and codes to ensure personal and public safety. 

Experiential learning 

  • Participate in the planning and preparation of television, mobile, and/or web productions. 
  • Monitor and maintain the technical quality of productions during recording and broadcasts using resources, equipment, and protocols.

MEDI1026 Audio Acquisition

Audio Content Creation starts your use of live and recorded sound in content creation. This course addresses what sound is and how it’s captured and enhanced, before being distributed across multiple platforms. Sound recordings will occur in the studio and in the field using a variety of microphone types.

TVFD1001 Digital Content Creation 1

This introductory course is designed to equip students with the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary for designing compelling digital content using photo editing software and website design tools. Through a blend of theoretical concepts and hands-on practical exercises, students will delve into the essential aspects of graphic design, basic animation techniques, and website creation.

WRIT1024 Introduction to Storytelling and Writing for the Screen

Introduction to Storytelling: In this portion of this course, students will delve into the captivating world of documentary storytelling, exploring the myriad techniques and strategies employed by filmmakers to craft compelling narratives that inform, inspire, and provoke thought. Through a combination of theoretical discussions, practical exercises, and hands-on projects, students will develop a deep understanding of the documentary form and hone their skills as storytellers. Writing for the Screen—Short Format: In this portion of the course, students will be introduced to the various script formats used for short-form writing. They will also explore the dynamic world of audio/visual scriptwriting for commercials, promos, hosted lifestyle series, and other short-form content.

MEDI1034 Multicamera & Technical Operations 1

Students will be introduced to the multi-camera production environment and the technical operation requirements of Film & TV-style production. Hands-on learning exercises are combined with lectures to provide the learner with both the "how" and "why" of content creation.

TVFD1000 Professional Practice of Film and TV

Embark on a transformative journey to master the art of professionalism in the dynamic and competitive world of film and television production. This comprehensive course provides participants with the essential skills, insights, and strategies to thrive as industry professionals, fostering success in both creative and business endeavours. Through a blend of theoretical study, practical exercises, and real-world case studies, participants will explore the core principles of professionalism in the film and TV industry.

TVFD1003 Visual Content Creation 1

The essential elements of single camera field production and post-production are combined in this foundational course. Learners will explore professional format camera techniques, post-production workflow and introduction to professional video editing through demonstration and content creation assignments.

MEDI1030 Audio Post Production

The audio tool kit options will increase as students advance their skills in film and TV post sound production editing. You’ll use audio editing software for recording and editing in single and multitrack formats.

TVFD1002 Digital Content Creation 2

Digital Content Creation 2 is an intermediate-level course aimed at refining and expanding students' design skills in creating captivating digital content. Building upon the foundational knowledge acquired in Digital Content Creation 1, this course focuses on more sophisticated techniques and tools essential for professional-level content creation. Students will explore advanced concepts in compositing, green screen keying, screen replacements, and intricate motion graphics through a combination of theoretical study and practical application.

ETHI1018 Ethics and Current Affairs

The complexity of issues and current events affecting content creators will be the focus of this course, helping students to reflect on multiple ethical perspectives.

WRIT1025 Intermediate Storytelling & Writing for the Screen

Intermediate Storytelling: The Storytelling portion of this course continues where the Introduction to Storytelling left off. Analysis of previously produced student documentaries, how to chase a story and create a Story Outline, and how to conduct a proper interview are explored further. Writing for the Screen – Long Format: In this portion of this course, aspiring screenwriters will embark on a transformative journey into the world of long-format scriptwriting, learning the essential skills and techniques necessary to create compelling narratives for film and television.

MEDI1035 Multicamera & Technical Operations 2

Students will continue to explore the multicamera production environment and intermediate TV and film technical operations through lecture and hands-on crew-based production projects.

TVFD1004 Visual Content Creation 2

Learners will build upon their skills from Visual Content Creation 1 in both single-camera production and post-production video editing to produce engaging, technically sound content. Learners will explore professional lighting workflow, image manipulation such as colour correction and continue to develop their skills with video editing software and camera operation.

Learners will build upon their foundational skills in this script-based production course. Both single camera and multi-camera production environments will be utilized as students research, write, plan and film their own digital film concepts. Factual Entertainment 1 is an innovative course that immerses television students in the production of real-life content centered around capturing the journey of a group of individuals as they work toward a common goal. Through a blend of practical experience, theoretical instruction, and collaborative storytelling, students will create engaging and insightful television content that offers viewers a glimpse into the lives and experiences of this assigned group. TVFD2010 Intermediate Production Techniques

The Intermediate Production Techniques course is designed to elevate an understanding and proficiency in camera and lighting techniques, equipping them with the skills necessary to excel in professional production environments. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and hands-on practical exercises, students will explore advanced concepts in cinematography, multi-camera productions, and more, focusing on industry-standard lighting and grip equipment, as well as the technical needs of a multi-camera production. TVFD2003 Production Planning

The Production Planning course immerses students in the intricacies of planning and preparation essential for creating compelling long-form content, such as short films, documentaries, and narrative series. Through a blend of theoretical exploration, practical exercises, and industry insights, students will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate the complex pre-production phase. TVFD2004 Remote Event Production 1

Students will explore the comprehensive production and technical requirements of multi-camera production outside of the studio. Learners are introduced to working with external facilities and production partners to plan and produce live event coverage. Commercial Production offers a specialized exploration of the unique challenges and creative opportunities inherent in producing short-form, branded, and ad-based content for various platforms and mediums.

TVFD2012 Digital Filmmaking 2

Concepts planned in Digital Filmmaking 1 come to life in this robust production course. Learners will utilize field and multi-camera production equipment as well as video editing and effects software to film, refine and finalize their scripted productions.

TVFD2005 Documentary Storytelling 2

Through practical exercises and collaborative projects, students will build upon their knowledge to produce documentaries, receiving guidance and feedback from their instructors. They will expand on the fundamentals of camera operation, sound recording, and editing techniques, utilizing industry-standard equipment and software to bring their visions to life. Learners will also learn to create a website for their documentaries, adding value to their stories. By the end of the course, students will emerge with a comprehensive understanding of the documentary storytelling process, equipped with the skills and confidence to create impactful and thought-provoking documentaries that engage, enlighten, and inspire audiences.

TVFD2006 Factual Entertainment Production 2

Factual Entertainment 2 builds upon the foundational skills acquired in Factual Entertainment 1, offering students an opportunity to further develop their expertise in creating compelling television content while integrating advanced multi-camera editing techniques. This course delves into the intricacies of multi-camera production and post-production, empowering students to craft immersive and engaging factual entertainment series. Throughout the course, students will work collaboratively to produce a high-quality factual entertainment series that demonstrates their mastery of advanced storytelling techniques, production skills, and multi-camera editing expertise.

TVFD2013 Professional Portfolio

Standing out in a competitive content creation job market is essential. This final Semester course is designed to assist learners in marketing themselves to potential employers and as a freelance content creator. Film and TV focused resume and cover letter creation, developing a professional brand and networking strategies are key topics as students develop their culminating professional portfolio.

TVFD2009 Remote Event Production 2

Continuing on-location, multi-camera productions, this course will elevate a student's crew skills. Particular attention will be placed on event planning and working with production partners.

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, mature student status. 

Required academic preparation

  • Grade 12 English (C) level or equivalent. 

Recommended
