1. Introduction and Purpose
It is the intention of the College to hire, where possible, Loyalist College students to perform work during the summer period (May to August).
2. Application
This policy applies to all students working for the College during the summer.
3. Policy Statement
The rate of pay for summer students will be not less than the student minimum wage set out in the Employment Standards Act plus 4% in lieu of vacation. Where funding is received for special projects and the funding agency has specified employment guidelines, the guidelines so specified will take precedence.
Subject to applicant(s) possessing the necessary competence, skill, ability, and experience for summer student positions, preference will be given in the following order:
- Loyalist students who are attending the College and who will be returning to the College in September.
- High school students or persons who will be attending Loyalist College in September.
- Loyalist students who are attending the College but who are not returning in September.
Students working 25 hours or more per week during the period May 1 – August 31 inclusive are covered under the Support Staff Collective Agreement – “Appendix G – Summer Student Workers.”
Appendix G students will also be granted pay for statutory holidays (Victoria Day, Canada Day and Civic Holiday) if scheduled to work.
