Belleville, Ontario, December 14, 2020 – Today Loyalist College announced the launch of its new one-year Emergency Management and Incident Response Ontario college graduate certificate program, which begins this May at its Belleville campus.

“The need to protect our communities and support individuals is more critical than ever with increasing natural disasters associated with weather and geological events, as well as those created by humans, including technological incidents, events related to hazardous materials, and criminal attacks,” said Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan, Loyalist College President and CEO. “The shortage of emergency managers that existed prior to the pandemic has been exacerbated by increasing demands for the safeguarding of society through disaster preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation. This new program, the result of ongoing conversations with government, public and private sector partners, will immediately address these skills gaps to help Ontario strategically prepare for a safer future.”

This post-graduate program is designed to prepare graduates for an exciting and rewarding career providing management expertise in a range of emergency situations. Students will explore topics such as planning and coordination, legislative frameworks, risk and assessment, incident management systems, and incident response and crisis communications. The blended delivery of this program, which includes online learning and weekend workshops, will give students the opportunity to learn how to develop, review and update emergency policies and programs based upon relevant legislation, standards and procedures, and requirements for conducting effective hazards identification and risk assessments. Students will develop, conduct and evaluate training programs and exercises to test current emergency management programs while assessing the integration and compatibility of various emergency polices, plans and procedures. Students will also develop strategies for implementing and maintaining a business continuity plan that will ensure the recovery of normal operations for affected businesses and industries.

Graduates from this program will be prepared to fulfill a range of roles, including emergency management analyst, incident commander, emergency preparedness planner, emergency and business planning coordinator and emergency response officer, among others.
