Meet the instructors
Andrew Edgar has been a visual artist for more than 20 years. A graduate of Nova Scotia College of Art and Design with a BFA and a Bachelor of Education, he launched a teaching career, helping students gain an understanding of the creative process and how to develop and refine their artistic practice. Natural, rugged environments inspire his work, which reflects the objects and spaces of his surroundings. Andrew strives to create a framework in his practice communicating that the natural world is beautiful, holds infinite curiosities, and deserves our respect and admiration.

Tanya Fenkell is passionate about our deep interconnectedness and mutual dependency on nature and knowsthat reliance on nature is a profound and fragile privilege. She is especially interested in treasuring moments of solitude in the natural world and works to convey this fascination in watercolour, textile-based, and sculptural pieces. Tanya holds a BA in English Literature from McGill University, an MA in English and an MIS from the University of Toronto. Her artwork is shown throughout Ontario and her work is held in private collections in Canada, the US, and the UK.

Shawn Hamilton has been a professional photographer since 1986 when her horse photography attracted the interest of magazine publications which hired her to cover numerous World Equestrian Games and the Olympics. She travels the world photographing and writing horseback riding vacation articles for magazines such as Canadian Horse Journals, Horse Illustrated, The Chronicle of the Horse, National Geographic Traveller Magazine and others. To give back to the industry of photography, Shawn has been teaching courses both in person and online for the past decade.

Whether it is used boldly or with subtlety, colour always has something to say. Ketha Newman has been lino block printmaking as well as painting with watercolours, acrylic, and ink on panel since graduating with a Fine Art History degree from the University of Toronto in 1996. Living off-the-grid and surrounded by wilderness for many years, her work is informed by this immersion in nature. Patterned and stylized interpretations of scenery, plants, animals, and the machinery and activities of the local population, both contemporary and historical, are themes she often explores. She also enjoys working on community-engaged art projects, creating public art, teaching art to all ages, and drawing.

Gord Jones is inspired by his forested, rugged, lake-dotted surroundings. He loves how watercolour allows him to transfer the light and shadow from his photographs to his paintings. Darlene Kulig’s joyful work can be found in Canadian Embassies around the world as well as The Mayo Clinic and The Ottawa Hospital Oncology Department. Granted to only 6 Canadian students entering fine arts, she was awarded the CSEA/Berol Prismacolour National Art Scholarship based on outstanding potential and graduated as an Associate of OCAD. She quickly established herself in the commercial art world and owned a successful design studio. Darlene began painting full-time fifteen years ago, utilizing synthesis or stylization – an approach that came into Eurocentric art from Japan in the mid-1800s. John Shaw-Rimmington studied art at Cranbrook Institute, Michigan, and is a constantly emerging and evolving artist. He specializes in applying historic dry stone wall techniques in creative collaboration between man and the environment, augmenting the natural beauty of the surroundings. His stone art installations appear across North America, in outdoor sculpture parks, galleries, schools, public parks, and private estates. John specializes in dry stone footbridges, follies, ‘new’ stone ruins, and other unique manifestations of land art, incorporating only natural, random, locally sourced stone. Alice Vander Vennen has worked as a professional artist since 1980. A child of immigrant parents who left war-torn Holland, she has used her art to capture stories of loss and hope, courage and strength. Sharlena Wood is a professional visual artist whose practice involves painting, drawing and experimental mixed media. Dr. Isaac Akrong holds a Master’s degree in Dance and a PhD in Ethnomusicology from York University. Hailing from the Ga people of Ghana, his love of traditional music and arts led him to the University of Ghana, School of Performing Arts where he completed an undergraduate degree. As a choreographer, master drummer, drum maker, and artistic director, Isaac creates new works as well as maintains traditional music and dance through the African Dance Ensemble. In 2023, with a Board of Directors, Isaac incorporated the African Arts Institute, a not-for-profit centre for education, research, and entertainment in African arts.

John Anderson is a veteran oil and acrylic painter and instructor of both plein air and studio painting. His artistic focus is a contemporary approach to landscape and still life, rooted in the colourist approach. His work has a strong emphasis on engaging compositions, accurate values involving the character, and movement of light through space. Confident, expressive brushwork is also a feature of John’s approach to painting. The Roberts Gallery in Toronto, the Double Doors Gallery near Barrie and the Southampton Art Gallery are his main exhibition spaces.

Emebet Belete is a graduate of the Addis Ababa Fine Arts School, and Queen’s University, Kingston, whose artistic practice reflects her cross-cultural observations living in Ethiopia, Canada and Asia. Her work ranges from oil and acrylic to collage and mixed media and can be found at the National Museum of Ethiopia, the Ethiopian National Institute of Culture, TEDA Archives (China) and in private collections around the world. In 1989 she pursued a full-time career in fine art. Megan Fitzgerald works within the realms of expanded painting to extend the boundaries of the landscape genre. She collects objects, grinds earth pigment, stitches textiles, and documents through drawing. Stewart Hood followed his graduation from Ontario College of Art with the pursuit of an advertising career. This deferred but didn’t extinguish his passion for painting which he returned to in the early 1990’s, cycling and painting throughout Canada and overseas. In addition to painting ‘en plein air’ in watercolour, Stewart also paints acrylic and water-soluble oil landscapes and large acrylic abstracts in his home studio. A recent award has broadened interests to include painting realistic acrylics and oils adapted from exceptional photography, capturing an instantaneous moment of the light.

Tania Love is a visual artist and yoga instructor with over two decades of experience in developing her practice and sharing her knowledge. She has partipated in numerous artist residencies, exhibited within Canada and internationally, and been supported through grants from Canada Council and Ontario Arts Council, notably a Chalmers Arts Fellowship. Tania’s approach to yoga offers breath-aligned movements and sequencing, supportinga feeling of balance and promoting a sense of deep rest to the nervous system. Nancy Newman is a supportive, encouraging, and professional teacher with a Visual Arts Specialist credential. She conducts both live and Zoom workshops for many art societies and has taught regular sessions of classes at a variety of centres and prestigious schools. A Director and Past President of the Toronto Watercolour Society (TWS), she’s also proud to be a Signature Member, Silver Level, of TWS. Rene Petitjean has been a maker of objects for more than 50 years. After attending Sheridan College, he bought Robin Hopper’s Ontario studio in 1975 and began a reduction-fired line of pottery, selling to stores throughout North America. The business expanded to include a selection of salt-glazed pottery sold under the Bowerman’s Hollow logo. Rene developed a fascination for wrought iron and eventually left the ceramics field to design and build architectural iron. Monika Rosen holds a BFA from Queen’s University and an MFA in Painting from the New York Academy of Art. Fascinated by the relationship of psychology and the landscape, she works primarily in oils and monotypes to explore notions of self-transformation, sanctuary, and resilience. Living in the mountains of BC for several years nurtured a love of the outdoors, and she incorporates en-plein-air painting in her practice and teaching wherever she can. Monika’s work was recently exhibited in Kingston’s City Hall and is a part of local and international collections, including those of 21C Museum Hotels and The Daniels Corporation in Toronto.

Marta Scythes is a fine artist, medical illustrator, and stroke researcher. She teaches portraiture, botanicals, drafting, drawing and watercolour painting at varioius institutions throughout Ontario. Her illustrations have been published by Harrowsmith Magazine, Simon & Schuster and Harper Collins, US. McClelland & Stewart featured her work in the best-selling UP NORTH series and in The Canadian Encyclopedia. Marta holds a MSc in Biomedical Communications from the University of Toronto and a Masters of Design from OCADU. Rob Stimpson has photographed for Ontario Tourism, Parks Canada, Ontario Parks and many organizations actively supporting tourism. He has explored Antarctica, the Arctic, Northern Quebec, Northwest Territories, and Greenland, as an expedition photographer and photographer in residence. Rob was nominated and elected into the Royal Canadian Geographical Society’s College of Fellows and he has been profiled by The Globe and Mail and Lexus. He co-authored An Artists and Photographers Guide to Wild Ontario and has also been a contributor to other published books. Alphons Van Mil holds an Hon BFA from the University of Guelph and has worked in acrylic or oil paint on large canvases for most of his career. Danielle Reddick is a multimedia artist. She lives in art, drawing inspiration from the surrounding landscapes. Materials (perhaps stones, old wire, driftwood, discarded hardware) are freely chosen and processed, resulting in the creation of paintings, sculptures and fibre works. With all manner of life’s undertakings filtered through her creative lens, every moment in her life is lived in creative process. As an exhibiting artist, Danielle has received numerous awards for her work. Her art is in private collections as well as public spaces.

Kirei started designing jewellery using glass nuggets in the mid 90’s and began fusing glass in 2000 when she became mesmerized by the striking beauty of Dichroic glass. She has had media coverage in newspapers, TV, and magazines, including InStyle and, most recently, on 99.3 FM’s County Profiles. With a rich history of craft shows and festivals, Kirei now works out of her studio where she creates and teaches. She has also taught a variety of ages at assorted institutions and groups.
