How you'll learn

Experiential learning

This program will allow you to explore your options and earn college credits while you try out a range of skilled trades:

  • Experience various trades with introductory courses in Electrical Engineering, Welding, Automotive/Motive Power, Construction Renovation, and Manufacturing/Mechanical Techniques.
  • Gain valuable hands-on experience with the latest equipment and techniques in Loyalist’s Bay of Quinte Skills Centre.
  • Earn industry certificates in the program, including First Aid and CPR, WHMIS, High Lift and Fall Arrest certification.
  • Trades are introduced over two semesters, allowing you time to develop solid skills and evaluate your opportunities.
  • Hands-on learning is supported by courses in mathematics and communications in both semesters, ensuring the skills for success in future college diploma programs, or employment in entry-level positions.
  • Learn in small classes from dedicated faculty who are industry leaders in their field.

Courses

AMST1009 Basic Auto 1

This introductory automotive course provides students with the identification and location of automotive components in the transportation industry. Safe shop work practices, basic tools and equipment are a focus in the first semester.

ELTP1016 Basic Electricity 1

This electricity course introduces students to fundamental electrical principles, with attention to tool selection and the safe use of the tools used in the electrical trade. Students examine direct current, series and parallel circuits, and the testing of those circuits.

CNTP1007 Building Construction Techniques 1

This course is a hands-on introduction to various components and methods used in residential construction. A focus on hand tools and their safe use is emphasized in the construction of a small project, with particular attention to shop and tool safety.

COMM1049 Communications 1

This course focuses on the writing and research skills required for successful completion of college-level studies in the skilled trades. Attention is given to proper grammar and spelling in the writing of a technical report.

COMP1020 Computers 1

Students focus on the basic use of a personal computer. Introductions to software programs will enhance their use of up-to-date technology. Microsoft Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint are covered in this semester.

MANU1013 Machine Tools 1

Students learn the basic methods of metal cutting using various machine shop tools such as lathes and mills. They also learn the use of hand tools that are applicable to the machining trade. Shop safety is taught and reinforced on all machines and related tools, as well as good housekeeping.

MATH1032 Math 1

This course enables students to develop basic analytical skills that will be useful in various skilled trades. Topics include the use of calculators, basic number operations and algebraic operations.

WELD1007 Welding 1

This course teaches various fabrication methods used in the manufacturing industry. The focus is on shop safety and the safe handling and use of the equipment. Oxy-acetylene welding, brazing and cutting are introduced.

AMST1010 Basic Auto 2

This course is a continuation of AMST 1009, focusing on the functions of basic engine components and electrical components that apply to the transportation industry.

ELTP1017 Basic Electricity 2

This course is a continuation of ELTP 1016. The focus is on types of alternating current circuits with an introduction to three-phase power. Fundamental math concepts are used for various calculations.

CNTP1009 Building Construction Techniques 2

In this continuation of CNTP 1007, students are introduced to a project that utilizes framing practices in the residential construction industry. The selection, use and maintenance of portable and stationary power tools are introduced.

COMM1059 Communications 2

In this continuation of COMM 1049, students continue to focus their research skills using various media. Proper cover letter and résumé writing are presented. Oral, written and interviewing skills are also included.

COMP1024 Computers 2

To further the students’ knowledge of computer-based technology, they will be looking at how to search specific topics on the Internet. Job search techniques and cover letter and résumé writing are taught in a professional format.

HLTH1005 Health & Safety

Students are introduced to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, as well as learning their rights and responsibilities. WHMIS is also covered as it relates to all necessary shop environments. Upon successful completion, students will be issued certificates in Basic First Aid and Fall Prevention.

MANU1014 Machine Tools 2

This course is a continuation of MANU 1013. Students apply their knowledge and skills to building various projects.

MATH1036 Math 2

In this continuation of MATH 1032, students gain further knowledge of measurement, geometry and trigonometry as applied to the skilled trades.

WELD1010 Welding 2

In this continuation of WELD 1007, students focus their learning on Shielded Metal Arc Welding (S.M.A.W.) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (G.M.A.W.) and the safe use of these techniques and machines. Different welding positions, as well as electrode identification, are examined.

Required academic preparation

  • OSSD/OSSGD or equivalent with courses at the general, advanced, (C), (U) or (M) level, AND
  • Grade 12 English (E) level or equivalent

  • Domestic Tuition: $2,722.08
