Loyalist Paralegal Program Receives Accreditation By Law Society of Upper Canada

June 24, 2010

Loyalist College
has received notification that the College’s Paralegal program is now
an accredited program with The Law Society of Upper Canada. In January
2004 the Attorney General of Ontario asked the Law Society to expand
its public interest mandate to include paralegals. As part of its
mandate the Law Society will be accrediting paralegal education
programs in Ontario, approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and
Universities. These programs are required to include, at a minimum,
certain fundamental courses that cover the essential elements of
procedural and substantive practice as well as ethical and responsible
practice.

Graduates of
accredited paralegal education programs will be eligible to apply to
write the Paralegal Licensing Examination that, in addition to other
requirements, must be completed to qualify for a license to practise as
a paralegal in Ontario. All paralegal applicants who apply for a
paralegal license with the Law Society after June 30, 2010 must have
graduated from an accredited legal services program.

“Receiving
accreditation has been a thorough and lengthy process led by program
coordinator and professor Jane Bailey,” said Dan Holland, Dean of the
Schools of Business and Management Studies, Biosciences and the Centre
for Justice Studies at Loyalist College. “The College has developed a
strong and reputable Paralegal program over the past 20 years. This
fact is reflected in The Law Society’s decision to recognize Loyalist’s
program as one of only 12 accredited programs in Ontario. Now our
graduates will be entering the workforce with expanded opportunities,
qualified to meet the demand within the legal field.”
