Loyalist College Walks Double Time

September 27, 2007

On September 26th members of the Loyalist community participated in the College’s third annual Terry Fox Walk. Organized by Professors Larry Cook and Gerry MacNeil of the Centre for Justice Studies, students and staff joined together to walk, jog or run the one-mile distance. To date, $536 has been raised for ongoing cancer research and patient care from this event.

Loyalist College is also preparing for the "Walk With The President" event on October 3rd at 12:30 p.m. with College President Maureen Piercy. Students from the College’s Recreation and Leisure, and Fitness and Health Promotion programs are planning and coordinating the event at the College. Members of the community are invited to participate in this component of the World Record Walk (WRW). Organized by Green Communities Canada with support from the Ontario Ministry of Health Promotion, WRW is an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most people walking one kilometer at the same time. The current record is held by Western Australia with 100,915 participants in September 2006.

The World Record Walk is aimed at creating a culture of walking by:

  • Connecting with the Walk21 message of putting pedestrians first
  • Encouraging municipal leaders to sign the International Charter for Walking
  • Heightening public awareness of the benefits of walking and active transportation.

Be part of the “Walkolution” and help Ontario set a new world record. For further information on how to be part of Loyalist’s “Walk With the President” event contact Professor Doug Lafreniere at lafrenie@loyalistc.on.ca.
