Loyalist College Congratulates Esthetics and Spa Management Students of the Year

April 24, 2013

On April 3, Esthetics and Spa Management students Deborah Merrill and Shannon Dillon were named the International Dermal Institute Students of the Year at the annual Esthetics graduation dinner. The award is presented annually by the International Dermal Institute to the top two graduating students.

“Our Students of the Year receive $2,500 toward their post-graduate studies at any International Dermal Institute, which allows them to further specialize and refine their skills in skin and body therapy,” explained Esthetics and Spa Management Professor Bridget Ferguson. “Many of our grads choose to work in spas around the world that feature the Dermalogica product line because of their experience working with it at the College. Having the opportunity to use those products in The Spa at Loyalist has been an added benefit for them.”

Both students received prize packages from the International Dermal Institute, including a certificate of achievement signed by the Education Manager, a letter of congratulations, a voucher for $150 worth of Dermalogica product, and a Student of the Year card which enables each student to take International Dermal Institute classes for one year (a value of $2,500).

“I never expected to receive this recognition,” said Deborah. “Tonight is such a happy occasion, yet at the same time I feel sad. This is the end of a very special segment of my life. As a mature student, this was essential to carry me through the past two years. My time at Loyalist has been a very positive experience and I’m looking forward to the next chapter, feeling confident and prepared.”

“It was right after my first practical exam in first semester when I realized that I want to eat, breathe and sleep this career – I love it,” said Shannon. “Here I am, learning from so many professionals. Each of the faculty members has different strengths based upon their personal life experience and education. This means that we are able to draw on everything they have learned in the field. What a rich learning environment. I’m so glad I made this choice.”

Other graduating students from the program each received a graduation package from the Institute including a letter of congratulations, a $100 gift certificate for the International Dermal Institute and a Dermlogica product sample pack.
