Loyalist College 2014 Milestones – A Year in Review

December 24, 2014

As Loyalist College completes its Strategic Plan for 2009-2014, the College is reviewing its Strategic Plan for the next five years, from 2015-2020. Once details are provided online in the New Year, community members will be encouraged to provide input to the strategic directions. Ongoing engagement helps to advance Loyalist’s mission to support the economic and social development of individuals and our communities.

Now, more than ever before, college education is essential to the local economy and to helping grads enjoy long-term success. As we reflect on what we have accomplished together in 2014, Loyalist College is proud to be in a strong position to continue advancing in 2015 as a leading community College:

Loyalist’s graduate employment rate is one of the highest in the province
88 percent of Loyalist grads found jobs within six months of graduation compared to the provincial average of 83 percent, according to Key Performance Indicators (for data collected from March 2013 to February 2014).

Loyalist students receive an excellent 17.5 percent return on their post-secondary education investment
A study of Loyalist by EMSI (Economic Modeling Specialists International) from December 2013 to July 2014 found that Loyalist students develop the skills required for an increasingly globalized workplace and receive a stream of higher future wages that continue to grow throughout their working lives.

Altogether, Loyalist and its students added $530.8 million to the Loyalist service region economy
According to EMSI, this added income was equal to approximately 5.4 percent of the region’s Gross Regional Product. The Ontario government gets a significant return of 15.4 percent for every dollar the province invests in the College.

Loyalist celebrated surpassing $6 million Campaign for Loyalist College goal
At a Campaign celebration event held at the College on December 11, Loyalist President and CEO Maureen Piercy joined with the Campaign leadership team to announce that $6.378 million has been raised to date to complete and equip the Sustainable Skills, Technology and Life Sciences Centre, and to establish awards and student financial assistance. Community partners were recognized for their contributions to the Campaign, which will continue in the future.

W. Garfield Weston Foundation Fellowship program extended at the College
Introduced at Loyalist in 2013, the three-year pilot program has been extended for another two years with funding from the W. Garfield Weston Foundation. Designed to help post-secondary students and apprentices to pursue skilled trades careers, the program encourages participants to complete their skilled trades education with significant financial support.

Loyalist launched new fully responsive website
In June, Loyalist introduced the new loyalistcollege.com to excite and inform future and current students and their influencers about the College’s post-secondary education offerings. Designed to optimize mobile experiences, the website uses a completely responsive design and is AODA compliant, providing easy access to program information, search functionality and contact information.

Two new one-year post-graduate Business programs to begin September 2015
On December 17, Loyalist announced the International Trade and Logistics Management program, which will prepare students to oversee the global movement of goods with insights into international customs and business practices. In October, the College introduced the Entrepreneurial Studies – Business Launch program, which will guide students through the process of starting up and launching their own business.

Professor Kerry Ramsay named 2014 Remarkable Woman of Quinte
In October, Professor Kerry Ramsay, post-graduate Public Relations Coordinator, was honoured with the Remarkable Woman of Quinte award, presented by The Intelligencer and sponsored by Shopper’s Drug Mart Quinte Mall. Kerry was nominated for her commitment to helping the community and the College by involving her students in numerous fundraising campaigns, teaching them the importance of philanthropy.

Loyalist receives confirmation of eligibility status for NSERC
In May, Loyalist College announced that it has received confirmation of eligibility status for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), one of Canada’s three research granting agencies. Having this status with NSERC allows Loyalist to pursue new grant opportunities and financial resources, furthering the College’s applied research and innovation activities across campus.
