Listeners Continue to Tune in to 91X at Loyalist College

August 30, 2007

Loyal listeners can continue to tune in to 91X and enjoy the alternative programming for which the College’s radio station is known. The Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has renewed the station’s licence until 2014. This means that following a review by the CRTC the station was found to be in compliance with its Promise of Performance and the rules and regulations governing radio.

91X is one of a handful of radio stations in Canada possessing a campus-instructional licence. The CRTC recognizes that one of the mandates of stations like Loyalist’s is to give real-life training to broadcast students. The commission also sets the bar for programming commitments much higher than for typical commercial stations. In the case of 91X, the College has a commitment to diversity of programming, high spoken word content, and the involvement from the community at large.

Much of 91X’s programming features progressive, alternative rock and is primarily hosted by Loyalist Radio Broadcasting students. Students of the Broadcast Journalism program provide a high level of news and public affairs content. There is also a contingent of community volunteers who produce programming that appeals to diverse segments of the audience. The program guide is available on-line at www.91x.fm.

The station’s coverage area extends from Colborne in the west to Napanee in the east, from the Highway 7 corridor in the north, south throughout Prince Edward County. 91X is also accessible globally through the Internet.

"The renewed licence will enable 91X to continue offering Quinte-area listeners a true alternative to mainstream programming," said Greg Schatzmann, 91X Station Manager. "It also allows Loyalist to remain at the forefront of broadcast training, giving its students real experience in becoming effective communicators."

This fall marks the 15th anniversary of the station and Loyalist wishes to thank the faithful fans who have helped make these years such a success. For more information regarding 91X visit www.91x.fm or tune-in to 91.3 FM.
