The Indigenous Resource Centre, with the support of the Indigenous Student Council, are pleased to provide social and cultural events on campus.
Smudging on Campus
Smudging is available to students in the Indigenous Resource Centre (3H9) upon request.
Craft Workshops
Weekly crafting sessions are facilitated by our Visiting Grandmothers and have included crafts such as medicine bags, leather mittens, beaded keychains, dream catchers, and talking sticks.
Lunch and Learn Workshops
Lunch and Learn workshops are run on a “just in time” schedule to ensure that relevant information is provided for Indigenous students when they need it. Previous workshops have covered such topics as bursaries and scholarships, budgeting, time management and stress management.
Festival of Native Arts
Held the second Saturday of November each year, the Annual Festival of Native Arts showcases live entertainment including singers, drummers and dancers. The Festival hosts traditional vendors with a variety of beautiful crafts and other items for sale. Children are able to do crafts with our visiting Grandmothers.
Cultural Awareness
Our Indigenous Cultural Awareness course is an eight-week course sharing the language, culture, traditions, practices, medicines, dress and ways of knowing of the Indigenous culture.
Two Elders from the Tyendinga Mohawk Territory take the participants on a journey through the culture from an Indigenous perspective. This journey is designed to provide a deeper sense and appreciation for the Native peoples’ way of life.
This course is held Saturdays from 9 am – 12 pm.
