SUBJECT: One additional Loyalist College Community member who tested positive for COVID-19 was on campus – low risk to the campus community

Dear College Community,

As COVID cases continue to surge across the province, there has been one additional member of our Loyalist College community who has tested positive for the virus since our last communiqué on April 14.

While the individual was on campus during their infectious period, those who may have come into contact with them have already been contacted by Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPE PH) and are self-isolating. The risk to the campus community, as deemed by HPE PH, is considered low, and appropriate risk mitigation measures, such as extensive disinfecting, have been implemented.

A general reminder that any individual on campus who does not adhere to Public Health guidelines and/or does not report symptoms or risk of exposure truthfully, is in violation of the student code of conduct and could face charges from Public Health, municipal by-law officers and/or police.

Further, if you have COVID-19, or are exposed to someone who does, it is absolutely imperative that Public Health is notified as it will help reduce the risk of further transmission. Even if you have mild symptoms, please stay home and take this self-assessment and/or get tested.

SUBJECT: A Loyalist College Community member who tested positive for COVID-19 was on campus – low risk to the campus community

Dear College Community,

Given the increasing number of people with COVID-19 across Ontario, it will come as no surprise that one of our College community members has tested positive for the virus.

Additionally, the individual could face significant fines and/or charges from Public Health, municipal by-law officers and/or police.

Further, if you have COVID-19, or are exposed to someone who has tested positive, it is absolutely imperative that Public Health is notified as it will help reduce the risk of further transmission. Even if you have mild symptoms, please stay home and take this self-assessment and/or get tested.

I know this has been an exceptionally challenging year for everyone, and with Spring finally here, we want to get back to our “normal” lives. That’s why it’s absolutely critical we remain vigilant in following Public Health guidelines. Vaccines are being administered at a steady rate, but these new COVID variants are exceptionally volatile and having a far more significant impact on young people, which is concerning.

SUBJECT: What the Provincial Emergency and Stay-at-Home Order means for our Loyalist College Community

Dear College Community,

As COVID-19 cases continue to surge at an alarming rate, the Ontario Government announced yesterday they are enacting a third Provincial Emergency and Stay-at-Home order, effective today, which will be in place for at least four weeks.

What this means is admission to campus will only be granted to individuals from the College’s region, and adjacent regions from Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit to Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit. Access to Loyalist College facilities will be limited to the small number of students and employees who were previously approved to attend in-person classes and labs, and are not at risk of having COVID-19. Students, faculty and staff living in any other region are strictly prohibited.

Given the rapid rise in transmission, and increasing risks posed by new COVID-19 variants, we are asking students and employees who are in the region to please stay home unless it is absolutely essential for you to be on campus.

In compliance with the Ministry of Colleges and Universities guidelines, everyone on campus must abide by Loyalist College’s Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) policy:

  • A mask must be properly worn in all public areas at all times, with the addition of a visor or goggles when two meters or less from another person for anything more than a brief period.

Infractions:

  • Given the current rate of infection in the local health unit, effective immediately, an individual found to be out of compliance with Loyalist College’s PPE policy will be asked to immediately leave the property, with no possibility of return for 24 hours. Access to campus will be reinstated after that period, when the individual has also agreed to adhere to Loyalist College PPE protocols. Any subsequent infraction will result in disciplinary action.

PPE Policy Enforcement:

  • A reminder that responsibility for enforcing PPE usage lies with Security and managers (for employees). If you have concerns that an individual is not wearing PPE, please speak with Security or your manager rather than confronting the person. While it is rare, an individual may have a valid medical exemption.

In the case of a medical requirement for a mask exemption:

  • Students must speak with AccessAbility Services to obtain a personal non-transferable pass prior to attending class or a lab. You are still required to wear a face shield.
  • Employees must speak with Occupational Health and Safety prior to working on campus in order to obtain a personal, non-transferable pass. You are still required to wear a face shield.

College Operations:

  • Bistro and food services will be closed for indoor dining, and only open for takeout
  • Loyalist College Bookstore will move online and be closed to retail traffic.
  • The Fitness Centre and Library remain closed.

Student Residents:

  • Residences remain open and any changes related to the Provincial Emergency and Stay-at-Home measures will be communicated directly with you. All students and staff in Residences must follow Public Health guidelines, including wearing masks or face coverings in all common areas. For questions regarding Residence, please contact residence@loyalistcollege.com

For general information, please visit:

Since our College campus became a Hastings Prince Edward Public Regional Immunization Centre at the beginning of March, over 36,000 vaccines have been administered and over 3,000 individuals in our community have been fully vaccinated. While we are making steady progress towards post-COVID recovery, the virus and its new variants are a growing concern in our region and across the province.

Thank you in advance for remaining diligent in following Public Health guidelines, and ensuring we protect ourselves and our community. For those who are finding it difficult to cope with the uncertainty of the situation, we have mental wellness supports for students as well as for employees and their families readily available.

Please take care, and be safe!

Sincerely,

SUBJECT: Impacts of province-wide emergency brake shutdown for Loyalist College

DATE: April 2, 2021

Dear College Community,

In response to the concerning surge in COVID-19 cases, and in order to protect our health care system, as well as the safety of our communities, the Ontario Government has announced a province-wide emergency brake shutdown, effective Saturday, April 3 at 12:01 am for at least four weeks.

While the emergency brake measures will not change the current state of learning and working at Loyalist College, we want to reinforce that if coming to campus is not essential, please stay home.

In compliance with the Ministry of Colleges and Universities guidelines, access to campus continues to be limited to:

  • Students in programs deemed to be providing an essential service to the community who have managed their risk adequately and have approval to come to campus/clinical to complete their studies. Any changes related to the new restrictions will be communicated directly to students by their school office.
  • Employees who are considered essential to campus operations and supporting students. Any changes to work schedules or locations because of the new restrictions will be communicated directly by their manager.

Anyone who is on campus for any of the above essential reasons must wear a mask or face covering in all indoor and outdoor areas.

For the small number of students and employees planning to be on campus, please note the shutdown will impact some College operations, including:

  • Bistro seating, which will be closed, and food services may also need to close, pending further review;
  • Loyalist College Bookstore capacity. Please contact the store directly at bstore@loyalistcollege.com or 613-969-1913, ext. 2218; and
  • The Fitness Centre and Library, which will remain closed.

In-person teaching (each instructional space at the institution at one time) and in-person examinations cannot exceed 10 students, with limited exemptions, such as Social Service Worker, Nursing, Paramedic and Personal Support Worker. For program-specific questions, please contact your program coordinator or School.

Student Residents:

  • Residences remain open and any changes related to the province-wide emergency brake measures will be communicated directly with student residents. All students and staff in Residences must follow Public Health guidelines. For questions regarding Residence, please contact residence@loyalistcollege.com.

International Students:

  • There have been no changes to the arrival of international students at Loyalist College, which is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) with a government-approved COVID-19 readiness plan.

For general information, please visit:

I know the fluidity of this situation is unsettling, and we’re all so ready to be back on campus – and that’s why it’s so important to continue adhering to Public Health guidelines – so we can all safely get through this pandemic. I want to remind students of the mental wellness supports readily available to you.

Please stay safe and ensure you take some time to rest and recharge this long weekend!

Sincerely,

SUBJECT: Supporting Students with Ancillary Fee Credit

DATE: March 30, 2021

Dear Students,

At Loyalist College, cultivating a caring, supportive learning environment is at the forefront of our planning. We know your academic and student life experience this year has been very different from what we all envisioned, and I don’t think any of us imagined we would still be manoeuvring through the COVID-19 pandemic over a year later. We want to recognize the remarkable perseverance and patience you have shown in the face of this pandemic, and the dedication to your studies throughout is truly commendable.

We understand the financial burden many of you carry has been exacerbated by the pandemic, and we want to help – whatever way we can. With this in mind, the College, in partnership with Student Government, has decided to provide an ancillary fee credit to students studying at the Belleville and Bancroft campuses and Port Hope satellite location.

The credit for full-time Belleville campus students will be approximately $200 per student. Returning students will receive a credit to their myFee account and graduating students will receive a cheque in the mail by summer.

As individual ancillary fee schedules vary, the precise amount credited to each student’s account will be commensurate with the fee schedule students have paid. What this means is that:

  • Part-time domestic and international students, and Bancroft and Port Hope students will have their credit amounts prorated.
  • Full-time international students will receive an additional 5%, relative to their higher fees. Please ensure you have a Canadian address on file.

The credit does not apply to Continuing and Distance Education students or Toronto campus students.

With our students’ success and well-being top of mind, Loyalist College faculty and staff have worked diligently to ensure you remain safe while still receiving the quality academic experience for which Loyalist College is known. Some of the pivots we’ve made include, but are not limited to, investing in new, online Student Success Services, offering individual IT supports, creating a Student Remote Learning Kitand moving the Student Food Cupboard online with curbside pick-up. In addition, we’ve reconfigured College facilities to ensure physical distancing, increased security and screening measures, and enhanced PPE and critical cleaning products and processes.

I believe we offer the most extensive and personalized services in the system; however, we recognize the scope of services delivered this year look different than what we all expected pre-pandemic.

We hope this credit is helpful and speaks to our commitment to supporting your success. We care about you, and will continue to do everything we can to empower you on your personal journey to a rewarding career destination.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan,

SUBJECT: Loyalist College Planning for a Safe Return to In-Person Learning for Fall 2021

DATE: March 10, 2021

Dear College Community,

This Saturday marks the one-year anniversary of the date we suspended normal College operations in 2020. It has been an exceptionally challenging year for everyone, especially students, many of whom have had to adapt to new ways of learning, being apart from friends and family, and precarious employment.

We are, however, very encouraged that our region is moving towards COVID-19 pandemic recovery. Since Loyalist College opened its doors as a Hastings Prince Edward (HPE) Public Health immunization clinic last Monday, vaccine administration has quickly ramped up.  As of today, almost 10,000 vaccines have been administered in the HPE community, at a few different locations. Almost 800 individuals have been fully immunized against COVID-19, meaning they’ve received both doses of the vaccine.

Coupled with this, COVID-19 case numbers have remained low in our Hastings Prince Edward region throughout the pandemic and since returning to the ‘Green – Prevent’ zone on February 10. Given this progress, and with community health and safety top of mind, I wanted to let you know Loyalist College is planning for a safe return to campus and in-person learning for the Fall 2021 semester. We know students are eager to return to campus, and I personally cannot wait to safely reconnect with you all in person!

We will be prepared to shift once again to multiple forms of delivery upon the advice of HPE Public Health.  At this point, we are very encouraged and optimistic and are planning for a safe return to campus.  We also know that some students preferred the flexibility of remote delivery and our students should see some of those continued offerings that allow them, wherever they are, to advance their careers through programs at Loyalist College.

As we have done throughout the pandemic, we will be working very closely with the Government of Ontario and our HPE Public Health partners to ensure we adhere to the necessary measures to protect our College community while providing students with a range of learning options.

I want to take this opportunity to thank our College faculty, staff and students who have been supporting frontline efforts. We so appreciate the hard work and long hours you’ve committed to supporting this crucial vaccination phase. Years from now, you will be able to tell the remarkable story of how you played a pivotal role in protecting our community at this most critical time.

I was so pleased to join our amazing volunteers, staff, and health care partners in sharing welcoming remarks at the official launch of the HPE Public Health Immunization Centre last Monday. At this time, vaccines are currently being offered to Phase 1 priority populations, which includes residents, staff and essential caregivers at long-term care homes, and health care workers who have been identified as having highest or very high risk. Pilot projects have begun to offer vaccinations to individuals 80 years and over, and appointment booking using the provincial booking system will open for all individuals 80+ beginning on March 15.

While we are beginning to feel cautiously optimistic, we recognize the future still holds many uncertainties. For students who are experiencing stress and anxiety, I want to remind you of the mental wellness supports available. Our caring faculty and staff are always here for you if you need someone with whom to talk.

As has been my promise throughout the pandemic, I will provide you with updates as soon as they become available.

SUBJECT: Loyalist College to Become Immunization Centre

DATE: February 23, 2021

Dear College Community,

I am delighted to share some good news with you today – we have confirmed that our Loyalist College campus will become a regional immunization centre. Our incredible team of faculty and staff are actively working with Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH) to get our immunization centre up and running on Monday, March 1.

This is a wonderful moment for our College, and will allow our faculty, staff and students to shine while being actively engaged in efforts to protect our community. It has been quite remarkable to see how Team Loyalist continues to support frontline efforts in so many ways and I couldn’t be more proud of this team.

For now, this will be one of the smaller clinics aimed at immunizing specific priority populations listed in Phase One of HPEPH’s COVID-19 Vaccine Roll Out Plan. The clinics in the next month will be for staff and essential caregivers at long-term care homes as well as high-risk health care workers. From there we will then immunize other populations listed in Phase One, such as individuals 80 years and over. Once the provincial criteria expands and vaccine availability increases, we hope to conduct larger clinics.

The clinic will be run out of the gym and dining hall facility but will not impact the bistro or food services pathway.

Effective Monday, March 1, we ask that essential faculty, staff and students who have approval to be on campus please refrain from using P5 and P6 parking lots so that we can support those individuals who need access to the clinic. In addition, parking will be deemed general, with no designated staff and student parking.

At this time, HPEPH will be reaching out directly to identified populations who are eligible to receive the vaccine.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to Hastings Prince Edward Public Health and all faculty and staff involved in responding to this need and making it happen so quickly and seamlessly.

For more information:

In the meantime, we know the COVID-19 situation continues to be challenging so I want to remind you of the mental wellness student supports that are available.

Please take care,

SUBJECT: Update on protocols for travelling in and out of Grey (Lockdown) and Red (Control) zones

DATE: February 18, 2021

Dear College Community,

I hope you had a restful, safe long weekend.

Now that the Province has returned to the colour coded regional COVID-19 Response Framework: Keeping Ontario Safe, I wanted to provide an update on campus safety procedures.

The health and safety of our College campus and surrounding communities is paramount and we want to maintain the lower level of risk we have achieved in our ‘Green – Prevent’ zone.

Since there are many students, faculty and staff travelling to and from campus from other regions, we have reinstated College protocols regarding travel in and out of ‘Grey – Lockdown’ and/or ‘Red – Control’ zones, effective immediately.

What this means is that any individual who has travelled to any Grey/Red zones in the past 14 days will be denied entry on campus so that we can further minimize unnecessary risk to the College community

There are however a few exceptions that are permissible, including:

  1. Students Living off Campus or in Residence who:
  • Prior to departure to a Grey/Red zone, seek and receive approval from the Health Centre to facilitate essential activities like family funerals, non-elective medical appointments, or family illness with risk of imminent decline in the family member. If you live in Residence, you should also seek approval from the Residence Manager.

Students in essential programs who are living in a Grey or Red zone may wish to explore the option of staying in Residence or other local accommodations.

  1. Students Living in Residence must either:
  • Isolate in Residence for 5-7 days. Access to the Pioneer and Kente buildings is not permitted. Residents must schedule a COVID test, receive a negative result dated between day 5-7 and be cleared for class, while continuing to self-monitor for symptoms for the remaining 7 days.

OR

  • Present to both the Residence Manager and Loyalist Health Centre a negative COVID test dated no earlier than 3 days prior to arrival and be symptom-free while continuing to self-monitor for symptoms for the remaining 7 days.

OR

  • Isolate in Residence for 14 days.

For questions regarding Residence, please contact residence@loyalistcollege.com.

  1. Employees who:
  • Are considered essential to campus operations and supporting students. Any changes to work schedules or locations will be communicated directly by the manager.

Limited food services are open.

While we are fortunate to have a low number of COVID-19 cases in our communities, we must still operate with caution, recognizing the continued risk posed by COVID-19 and its new variants. In order to prevent further transmission and protect our regional health care system, the Government of Ontario recommends following these public health measures.

For more information:

Please know we are here for you and there are mental wellness student supports in place. Our caring faculty and staff are also available if you need someone to talk to.

Please take care,

Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan

SUBJECT: Updates on Spring/Summer Program Delivery and Implications of Ontario Returning to Colour-Coded Regional Response Framework

DATE: February 10, 2021

Dear College Community,

I hope this finds you safe and well.

It is comforting to know that the low number of COVID-19 cases in our communities means Hastings Prince Edward is one of the first regions in Ontario to have reopened, as of today.

That said, for the next several months, as vaccines roll out, we will need to remain vigilant in following safety protocols. With health and wellness top of mind, I wanted to let you know that our Spring/Summer 2021 program delivery will look very similar to our Winter 2021 program deliveryMany programs will be blended delivery, combining remote and small in-class applied learning, while others will be all remote. We will share with you the Spring/Summer program delivery schedule in the coming weeks. If you have any program-specific questions before then, please contact your program coordinator or School.

On Monday, the Government of Ontario announced that they let the State of Emergency expire on February 9, and the province has now moved to a revised and strengthened regional COVID-19 Response Framework: Keeping Ontario Safe. As mentioned above, our Hastings Prince Edward Public Health region has moved into the “Green – Prevent” zone.

However, Loyalist College will continue to follow the broader “Grey” zone Stay-at-Home order until the province moves out of Shutdown because so many of our students and employees travel to and from other regions.

In order to ensure we protect campus health and safety, we are advising faculty, staff and students to continue to stay home as much as possible.

Please come to campus only if it is essential. In compliance with the Ministry of Colleges and Universities guidelines, access to campus is limited to:

  • Students in programs deemed to be providing an essential service to the community who have managed their risk adequately and have approval to come to campus/clinical to complete their studies.
  • Employees who are considered essential to campus operations and supporting students. Any changes to work schedules or locations because of the new restrictions will be communicated directly by the manager.
  • In-person teaching (each instructional space at the institution at one time) and in-person examinations cannot exceed 10 students, with limited exemptions, such as Social Service Worker, Nursing, Paramedic and Personal Support Worker.

In the coming days, we will provide an update on when some campus services, such as Food Services and the Bookstore, will reopen.

While we have moved into the “Green” zone, we must still operate with an abundance of caution, recognizing the continued risks posed by COVID-19 and its new variants. In order to prevent further transmission and protect our regional health care system, the Government of Ontario recommends the following public health measures:

  • Stay home as much as possible, especially if you have any symptoms;
  • Wear a mask where physical distancing is not possible, both indoors and outdoors;
  • Avoid travel except for essential reasons;
  • Limit close contact to your household and avoid social gatherings;
  • Wash your hands and surfaces thoroughly and regularly; and
  • Cover your cough and/or sneezes.

Should our region experience a rapid acceleration in COVID-19 transmission or if the health care system risks becoming overwhelmed again, Ontario has introduced a new ‘emergency brake’ for immediate action. For the full update, please read the Government of Ontario’s news release

For general information, please visit:

Coping with the challenges of this ongoing global health crisis can be difficult, particularly during these cold, dark winter months. I want to remind you of the mental wellness student supports available, and encourage you to reach out to our caring faculty and staff members, or your peers, if you need someone to talk to. We are all here for you – and each other.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide you with updates as they become available.

Stay safe,

SUBJECT: COVID-19 Communication: Protocols on travelling in and out of Grey (Lockdown) and Red (Control) zones

DATE: December 11, 2020

Dear Students,

In keeping with our responsive approaches to the changing nature of COVID-19, I wanted to share with you a College protocol change regarding travel in and out of Grey/Red high risk zones to further minimize unnecessary risk to the Loyalist community.

Effective immediately, any individual who has travelled to any Grey/Red zone in the past 14 days will be denied entry to the campus.

Loyalist is taking the Provincial Government’s mandate one step further by implementing this protocol as a mitigation measure.

Recognizing that it is not practical to have a 14-day ‘Do Not Enter’ protocol for everyone, the College has developed the following exceptions as examples of the types of scenarios that would be permissible.

Exceptions

Students Living in Residence or Off Campus:

  • Prior to departure to a Grey/Red zone, a student can seek approval from the Health Centre to facilitate essential activities like family funerals, non-elective medical appointments, family illness with risk of imminent decline in the family member. If you live in Residence, you should also seek approval from the Residence Manager.
  • Any student in a program deemed by a member of the College Executive Team to be providing an essential service to the community who has managed their risk within the grey and red zones adequately may come to campus/clinical to complete their studies. Please follow-up with your School if you are in this situation as you must seek permission before coming to campus.

Students Living in Residence:

If a student were to visit a Grey/Red zone and the 14-day restriction was to be fully enforced, they would have no way to return to Residence. In this case, the following protocols must be followed:

  • Students arrive on campus and must isolate in Residence for 5-7 days. No access to the Pioneer or Kente buildings. Schedule a COVID test, receive a negative result dated between day 5-7 and cleared for class, while continuing to self-monitor for symptoms for the remaining 7 days.

Thank you for your continued cooperation in keeping our College community safe,

SUBJECT: Three New COVID-19 Cases Associated with Loyalist College Reported Nov. 30 – Low Risk to Campus Community

DATE: November 30, 2020

Good evening,

I hope you had a restful weekend.

I wanted to let you know that three additional members of our Loyalist community have tested positive for COVID-19, two of whom spent limited time on campus during their infectious period.

The risk to Loyalist’s campus community is considered low. High risk contacts of those who tested positive have already been notified by Public Health.

As part of their contact tracing and risk assessment following a confirmed COVID-19 case, Public Health determines likelihood of exposure as high risk, low risk, or no risk based on a variety of factors (distancing, masks and PPE in use, time in close contact).  Simply being in the same room with a positive case does not necessarily mean you have been exposed, and if you are deemed as ‘no risk’ you will not be contacted by Hastings Prince Edward Public Health.

Classes and activities continue as scheduled for those who live in regions that are not in ‘Lockdown’ or ‘Control’ zones, explained in the provincial government’s Keeping Ontario Safe and Open Framework. Regions are based on public health unit boundaries. To find your Public Health unit, click here.

All three individuals, who contracted COVID-19 off campus, are self-quarantining off campus and we are in regular contact with them to ensure they have what they need and feel supported.

Ontario’s successful recovery depends on the collective efforts of each one of us to continue to follow public health advice, including these guidelines. If you think you may have been exposed to the novel coronavirus or have symptoms, take Ontario’s COVID-19 self-assessment.

It takes the cooperation of every single person on campus – staff, faculty, and students – to keep COVID-19 under control. This means truthful and accurate responses to screening and Public Health questions, and unwavering compliance with COVID-19 protocols. When this happens, we can trust that the system works. Students will not be penalized for answering honestly. If you are aware of a situation where you feel contact tracing information is not accurate, we urge you to advise Public Health.

The increasing number of cases connected to Loyalist reflects rising rates across our region, province and country. I understand how hard it is to receive these updates in such close succession; however, it’s important that the College remains transparent and communicates with our community quickly so that you can be comforted in knowing that Loyalist remains a safe place to learn.

Please know that with each update I send, I do so with a heavy heart. I care deeply for the health and well-being of our students, employees and partners.

Stay safe and well,

SUBJECT: Additional COVID-19 Cases Associated with Loyalist College Reported Nov. 24 – Low Risk to Campus Community

DATE: November 24, 2020

Dear College Community,

Today, Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH) reported that another Loyalist community member who spent limited time on campus during their infectious period has tested positive for COVID-19 in the past week, as well as three additional Loyalist community members who were not on campus during their infectious period. The individuals are close contacts of the person who tested positive on November 22. They are all self-isolating off-campus, and we are in regular contact to ensure they are well supported. This update brings the number of active Loyalist-related cases to five people.

The risk to the general College campus community is still considered low, as the student who was on campus was masked and physically distanced from others.

If you are not contacted directly by Public Health within the next 24 hours, you are not considered to be at risk.

Classes and activities continue as scheduled for those who live in green, yellow or orange zones, identified in the provincial government’s Keeping Ontario Safe and Open Framework.

As mentioned earlier today, students who live in a grey Lockdown zone with maximum measures (Toronto or Peel region) or red Control zone with stringent measures (Durham and Waterloo regions) are to contact their School directly to let them know they may require accommodations until the current Lockdown has been resolved.

If you must come to campus, please continue to adhere to the College’s strict on-campus safety protocols and processes, and in your daily schedule follow guidance provided in provincial assessment tools regarding testing and isolation.

If you’re feeling nervous about COVID-19, you’re not alone. This update, and regular news of increasing cases across the province can impact your mental health and well-being. We have supports for you and I encourage you to access the College’s student supports including Counselling, Student Success Mentors, and AccessAbility Services. For referrals, please contact studentsuccess@loyalistcollege.com. Having people with whom you can share feelings, discuss problems, and receive advice is an essential part of feeling balanced and well.

The health and safety of our College community is a shared responsibility and we must continue to be vigilant and thoughtful in helping to stop the spread of COVID-19. If you develop any symptoms, stay home.

As the situation evolves, we will continue to keep you up to date through email, as well as the College’s COVID-19 Information Centre.

Thank you,

Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan

SUBJECT: Loyalist students and employees living in regions in ‘Lockdown’ and with stringent ‘Control’ measures asked not to travel to the College

DATE: November 24, 2020

Good morning,

As you may be aware, the province has moved certain public health unit regions to new COVID-19 control levels in the Keeping Ontario Safe and Open Framework, including moving Toronto and Peel region into ‘Lockdown’ for a minimum of 28 days.

Provincial and regional health authorities are strongly recommending that people who are living in a region with maximum ‘Lockdown’ measures or stringent COVID-19 ‘Control’ measures not travel outside their region unless for essential services. This is critical in order to reduce COVID-19 transmission from these ‘grey zones’ or ‘red zones’ to the Hastings and Prince Edward region, which is a ‘green zone.’ If residents of grey or red zones have to travel outside their region, the rules for their zone still apply to them. For example, a resident who cannot eat in a restaurant in their region should refrain from eating in a restaurant in a green zone.

When it comes to the health and wellbeing of our community, the College wants to remove risks wherever possible. As such, we are asking that students or employees who live outside of the Hastings Prince Edward region in a grey or red zone do not travel to the College until otherwise notified. I know this is not ideal, and that you would prefer to be on-site for small class labs and hands-on activities. Rest assured we will provide learning accommodations, including alternate modalities of program delivery, assessment, and/or completion of academic requirements next term.

If you live in a grey Lockdown zone with maximum measures (Toronto or Peel region) or red Control zone with stringent measures (Durham and Waterloo regions) please contact your School directly and let them know you may require accommodations until the current Lockdown has been resolved.

Those living in an orange, yellow, or green zone can continue to attend College as you have been doing since Fall term commenced.

I appreciate that you are already making sacrifices and this request adds another challenge and disappointment, but every preventative action we take will help to flatten the curve and keep each other safe. It’s important that we support the amazing work of our Hastings Prince Edward Public Health partners in protecting essential workers and safeguarding our health system’s capacity. For the socioeconomic wellbeing of our region, we also need to do everything we can to keep our local economy open and support local businesses and employers.

While recent developments around a vaccine are promising, the rising numbers of cases in certain regions calls for this decisive action and I thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation. Please continue to follow guidance provided in provincial assessment tools regarding testing and isolation, and if you develop any symptoms, stay home and do not come to campus.

Stay safe and well,

Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan

SUBJECT: COVID-19 Case Associated with Loyalist College Reported Nov. 22 – Low Risk to Campus Community

DATE: November 22, 2020

Dear College Community,

Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH) has advised us today that a second Loyalist student has tested positive for COVID-19.

The risk to the general College campus community is considered low, and at this time, classes and activities continue as scheduled.

Public Health has completed the process of identifying and notifying individuals who are considered high risk contacts of the individual who tested positive and was on campus in Belleville. If you have not been contacted directly by Public Health, you are not considered to be at risk.

This news may be upsetting and come as a surprise as it follows on the heels of a similar but unconnected announcement last Thursday. In addition to implementing extensive safety measures and protocols to limit the spread of COVID-19 at our facilities, we are committed to taking care of our students and employees through personalized supports and health services, and accommodations where required. We are also ensuring that our student who is self-isolating feels supported and cared for remotely.

Given increasing rates of COVID-19 transmission, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, David Williams, is urging all Ontarians to limit trips outside of their homes, except for essential purposes, such as work where it is not possible to work from home, school, grocery shopping, medical appointments, and outdoor healthy physical activity.

In addition, Dr. Piotr Oglaza, Medical Officer of Health and CEO at HPEPH is asking residents of our region to reconsider or postpone non-essential travel to or from higher transmission areas to help reduce the risk of exposure to, and spread of, COVID-19. He’s requested that we avoid travel to other regions unless absolutely necessary and consider postponing invitations for visits from friends or family members who reside in other areas. HPEPH is asking that anyone visiting our region register on their Digital Guestbook, which is private, confidential, and requires only basic information. Every new case in our region increases the risk of local spread and could severely impact our vulnerable loved ones.

In addition to avoiding unnecessary travel, everyone should continue their efforts to reduce their number of high-risk contacts in general, which will help slow the spread of illness. To reduce high risk contacts, avoid the 3 Cs: closed spaces with poor ventilation; crowded places; and close contact where you can’t practice physical distancing.

We are all encouraged to monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and follow guidance provided in provincial assessment tools regarding testing and isolation. If you develop any symptoms, stay home and do not come to campus.

Thank you and take care,

SUBJECT: One COVID-19 Case Associated with Loyalist College Reported Nov. 19 – Low Risk to Campus Community

DATE: November 19, 2020

Good evening,

I wanted to let you know that the College has been notified today that a Loyalist student, who lives outside of Hastings and Prince Edward Counties, has tested positive for COVID-19.

At this time, the risk to the general College campus community is considered low. Public Health is responding to this case and is in the process of identifying high risk contacts of the individual.

I know this update may be concerning and I empathize. Please be assured that we are doing everything we can to keep you and the entire College community safe. Risk mitigation measures, including appropriate cleaning protocol, have been implemented at the College based on specific direction from Public Health.

Public Health officials are in the process of completing contact tracing, which involves identifying individuals who have been in contact with the individual who tested positive for COVID-19, and they will reach out directly to any student or employee who is considered high risk. High risk contacts of the case will be provided further direction by Public Health, typically within 24 hours.

Low risk contacts (including contacts of high risk contacts) should self-monitor for symptoms and seek testing if symptoms develop. Isolation of low risk contacts is not required unless symptoms develop.

Our student, who tested positive for COVID-19, is currently at home and we will continue to keep in contact with them remotely to ensure that they are supported and cared for as they self-isolate.

At this time, classes and activities continue as scheduled and the only action required of you is to continue following Loyalist’s preventative safety measures on campus, including completing the COVID-19 screening questionnaire.

If you are feeling unwell, stay home and do not attend classes/come to campus. If you experience symptoms of COVID-19, please follow direction provided in the province’s self-assessment tool

Thank you,

SUBJECT: A Message from the President about Thanksgiving and Fall Travel

DATE: October 6, 2020

Dear College Community,

It’s hard to believe the first month of the Fall semester is behind us and that Thanksgiving is just days away. In the spirit of the season, I wanted to take this moment to express my deep and sincere gratitude to you, our incredible students for your perseverance and hard work ethic, and to our outstanding faculty and staff members who continue to be so supportive, positive and caring during this time of great adversity. I know it is troubling to see cases of COVID-19 rise within Ontario, as well as across the country and around the world.

Thanksgiving is traditionally a time when we travel, near and far, to spend time with family and friends. If you must travel, please keep in mind that:

  • The Ontario Government has paused social circles.
  • Public Health officials across Ontario are advising people to limit interactions to those in their immediate household and essential supports.
  • Private social gatherings continue to be a significant source of transmission in communities of all sizes. Hosts of illegal gatherings face fines of $10,000, while guests can each be fined $750.
  • Routine COVID-19 practices are highly advised by Public Health, which include avoiding crowded areas; wearing a mask and/or face covering in all public spaces and where physical distancing is not possible; maintaining a distance of two metres from those around you at all times; avoiding touching your face; and washing your hands consistently and thoroughly.
  • The Government of Canada has created tools to assist Canadians with containing the spread of COVID-19 and maintaining their health. These include the Wellness Together portal, videos, the COVID Alert app and many other resources available at Canada.ca/coronavirus.

According to Hastings Prince Edward Public Health, there are eight active lab confirmed cases in our region. While the COVID-19 activity level remains relatively low in our region, we have a shared responsibility to keep our College and communities safe. I encourage you to continue to follow Public Health guidelines during these critical times when travel and social interactions are heightened. Information on how Loyalist is keeping its community safe on campus can be found in our COVID-19 Information Centre

Wishing you a safe and restful Thanksgiving long weekend.

Sincerely,

SUBJECT: COVID-19 Update: Loyalist Student in Quarantine Tests Positive – Risk to Campus Community Deemed Very Low

DATE: September 8, 2020

Dear College Community,

I am writing to let you know that we have been informed by Hastings Prince Edward Public Health that one of our students who is in quarantine after traveling to Canada, has tested positive for COVID-19, and is asymptomaticPublic Health will be notifying any individuals who have been in contact with the student. These individuals would have observed safety protocols such as social distancing and wearing a face mask, so they would be considered low risk.

As the student has been in quarantine since they arrived in the country, and has not been on campus, the risk to Loyalist’s campus community has been deemed very low. Through Public Health, we will continue to keep in contact with our student to ensure they are supported and cared for as they continue to self-isolate.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have been working very closely with our Public Health partners, as well as our own Student Health Centre medical personnel, faculty with expertise in infectious disease, and occupational health and safety professionals, to protect our students, employees and partners. We continue to take their direction and guidance in implementing very strict preventative safety measures, including:

  • Reconfiguring our facilities to ensure physical distancing;
  • Increasing security and introducing an app to track the arrival and exit of all individuals at limited entry and exit points;
  • Providing complimentary face masks to those on campus and requiring face masks to be worn;
  • Increasing the number of hand sanitizer stations located throughout campus and disinfectant wipes in classrooms and labs;
  • Posting handwashing guidelines in washrooms;
  • Stocking PPE and critical cleaning products such as wipes, replacement hand sanitizer solution, masks, gloves, and soap;
  • Redesigning our Student Success services online to easily connect students with mentors, resources and informational sessions;
  • Having employees work from home where possible to meet business needs remotely;
  • Closing public gathering spaces;
  • Offering student residents single occupancy rooms only within units of students in the same programs, where possible;
  • Providing detailed training documentation on the processes and protocols of returning to campus;
  • Introducing a COVID-19 testing facility on campus to support students and employees;
  • Establishing quarantine facilities to provide student accommodations in the event a student tests positive for COVID-19; and
  • Ensuring that any students who arrive from outside the country complete a 14-day off-campus quarantine period prior to being allowed on campus.

The health and safety of our College community is top priority and we will continue to go above and beyond to demonstrate our commitment and care.

Please visit Loyalist College’s COVID-19 Information Centre for updates, FAQs, and supportive resources. If you have a question that has not been addressed in the FAQ, please email marcom@loyalistcollege.com.

Loyalist provides the most supportive post-secondary education experience anywhere. In Loyalist’s small classes, you’ll never be a number, whether that’s in-person or online. Second to none are our Student Success services and Student Life programs, which we’ve amped up online to meet your needs in response to COVID-19. We know these last few months have been incredibly difficult – and we’re here for you – to help you get ahead.

As Canada continues to self-isolate, there’s never been a better time to gain new marketable skills and credentials so that when we emerge from this pandemic, you’re ready to launch, advance or change careers. Take advantage of new one-time short-term Federal funding, including the CESB, CSSG and CERB, as well as Loyalist’s $1M fund for student needs-based financial assistance. With additional funding to help pay for College, it makes sense to start this Fall semester, which runs September 9 to December 18, with study week (no classes) from October 26 to 30.

We’ve got your back – during this time of transition – and always. As a small, caring College, we’ll never lose that personal touch for which Loyalist is known. A recent survey of our current students revealed they feel supported both academically and personally, despite moving to remote delivery mid-semester. That means everything to us. We’ve drawn on our rich history as a leader in distance studies to make our remote classes as engaging and interactive online as they are in person. Our exceptional faculty go above and beyond to get to know you one-on-one, leverage your strengths and offer supports where you need them.

This Fall, Loyalist will offer blended program delivery including a combination of in-person classes for some programs, as permitted by health care officials, and robust remote delivery for other programs. These are interim measures until it’s safe for us all to return to campus. In a small number of programs, we may delay the start date in order to provide essential hands-on components from the outset. Faculty will contact students directly if that is the case.

Ontario’s three-phased plan to protect and support, restart and recover, along with recommendations from our public health partners, will guide the timing of Loyalist’s re-opening plans. Fortunately, we’re starting to see some signs of light at the end of the tunnel as the first wave of COVID-19 cases slowly declines and provincial restrictions start to loosen.

While our delivery will include various modes, our student support services are being redesigned to ensure that we are here to support you every step of the way. At Loyalist College, the student is at the centre of everything we do and that will continue regardless of the way in which our programs are delivered. We are also a leader in the provision of both face-to-face and distance education which allows us to combine both for the benefit of our students.

Once you’ve confirmed your program offer, your faculty members will be reaching out to introduce themselves and explain how your program will be delivered. They’ll also be asking how Loyalist can best support you – whether that’s connecting you with a mentor or sharing information on our new Learn 2 Learn tutoring sessions and summer ‘Smart Start Loyalist’ online transition course. As a student, all supports are included and readily available to you. We care about you and will go the distance to help you throughout your journey to achieve your career destination.

If you have any questions for faculty or staff, or would like to speak with a student or graduate from your program of interest, please don’t hesitate to contact us at recruiter@loyalistcollege.com. Or, if you have questions about how to apply and pay for College, contact info@loyalistcollege.com.

On behalf of Loyalist, we look forward to welcoming you to the family!

Sincerely,

Ann Marie

SUBJECT: In this time of transition – we are here to support you. Loyalist College Announces Fall semester program delivery plans
DATE: May 28, 2020

This Fall, we hope you’ll join us at Loyalist, Canada’s Destination College, where faculty, staff and students care personally about you and your success. Loyalist provides the most supportive post-secondary education experience anywhere. In Loyalist’s small classes, you’ll never be a number, whether that’s in-person or online. Second to none are our Student Success services and Student Life programs, which we’ve amped up remotely to meet your needs in response to COVID-19.

We know these last few months have been incredibly difficult – and we’re here for you – to help you get ahead, no matter where you are. As the world continues to self-isolate, there’s never been a better time to build your credentials so that when we emerge from this pandemic, you’re ready to launch, advance or change careers. It is still a great time to study in Canada.

Take advantage of Canada’s major study and work visa change, which allows international students to enrol in online courses while abroad this Fall and still be eligible for a three-year Post-Graduation Work Permit after moving to Canada. This only applies for Fall 2020, so I encourage you to start at Loyalist this September, rather than delaying your immigration plans.

Whether you are able to come to Canada in September or must start your learning online and join us as soon as health restrictions allow – we are here for you. During this time of transition – and always – we are here to support your dreams of studying in Canada and immigrating to Canada. Our exceptional faculty go above and beyond to get to know you individually, leverage your strengths and offer supports where you need them.

We always ensure that we take care of our international students who come to Loyalist College from such far distances, and we are thankful to the Consulate General of India for recognizing how we accommodated our students in hotels and provided food, in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

This September, Loyalist will offer blended program delivery including a combination of in-person classes for some programs, as permitted by health care officials, and robust remote delivery for other programs. These are interim measures until it’s safe for us all to return to campus. The timing of Loyalist’s re-opening plans will be informed by recommendations from the Ontario government and our public health partners. Fortunately, we’re starting to see some signs of light at the end of the tunnel as the first wave of COVID-19 cases in Ontario slowly declines and provincial restrictions start to loosen. While it’s not ideal to start your program remotely, your experience will be a rewarding one. Our current international students have told us that their alternative delivery experiences exceeded their expectations. We would never compromise our superior quality academics, delivery or support services.

Once you’ve confirmed your offer, we’ll be reaching out to introduce ourselves and confirm details around your program’s delivery methods. We will also ask how we can best support you – whether that’s connecting you with an English student mentor, sharing information on our ESL supports, or assisting you with health insurance and banking registration. Even before you arrive in Canada, you will have met faculty and friends who care about you and will go the distance to help you throughout your journey to achieve your career destination. As an international student, all supports are included and readily available to you.

If you’re an international student who has a valid study permit, or were approved for a study permit on or before March 18, 2020, you’re exempt from the travel restrictions. Find out what you need before you travel to Canada. If you’re travelling by air, you need to pass a health check conducted by an airline before you’ll be allowed to board your flight. Anyone who shows symptoms of COVID-19 will not be allowed to enter Canada by air. When you arrive in Canada, your health will be assessed before you leave the port of entry. You must have a plan to quarantine for 14 days when you arrive in Canada. This is mandatory, even if you have no symptoms. We are here for you during this time, and will make plans to support you, as required.

If you have any questions for faculty or staff, or would like to speak with a student or graduate from your program of interest, please don’t hesitate to contact us at: internationaladmissions@loyalistcollege.com.

On behalf of Loyalist, we look forward to welcoming you to the family!

SUBJECT: Loyalist College’s Fall semester program delivery plans
DATE: May 28, 2020

Loyalist College is so proud of how far you’ve come, and all that you’ve achieved in your program to date. We care about you and are here to support you every step of the way, as you prepare to return to the College in September.

This Fall, Loyalist will offer blended program delivery including a combination of in-person classes for some programs, as permitted by health care officials, and robust remote delivery for other programs. These are interim measures until it’s safe for us all to return to campus.

As Canada continues to self-isolate, there’s never been a better time to gain new marketable skills and credentials so that when we emerge from this pandemic, you’re ready to launch, advance or change careers. For returning domestic and international students, there is a $700,000 fund to provide needs-based financial assistance through one-time bursaries of up to $1,000 towards the cost of tuition. You can access the bursary application through the MyLoyalist portal. For domestic students, there’s also new one-time short-term Federal funding, including the CESB, CSSG and CERB. With additional funding to help pay for College, it makes sense to continue this Fall semester, which runs September 9 to December 18, with study week (no classes) from October 26 to 30.

During the first week of the Fall semester, you may have the option to complete small group open labs and program ‘boot camps,’ which will offer compressed delivery of some elements of the Winter 2020 semester’s curriculum. If these opportunities are offered through your program, a faculty member will be contacting you shortly about upcoming dates and times to participate in small classes with physical distancing measures in place.

In the next few weeks, your faculty members will be reaching out to you to confirm how your particular program will be delivered in September – and to touch base to see how you are doing. We know these last few months have been incredibly difficult – and we’re here for you. I encourage you to take advantage of our enhanced online Student Success services, including access to mentors, study assistance, counselling, and our new Learn 2 Learn tutoring sessions.

We care about you and will always go the distance to help you throughout your journey to achieve your career destination. The supportive learning environment at Loyalist continues, regardless of how or where it’s delivered. We look forward to speaking with you soon! If you have questions or require clarification, please don’t hesitate to contact your program faculty members or Dean.

Sincerely,

Ann Marie

SUBJECT: Loyalist Spring Semester (May 19 – August 7) will continue to be delivered remotely

I hope you’re enjoying your Spring semester program so far!

As you’re aware, the first six weeks of Loyalist College’s Spring semester classes are being delivered through online and alternative delivery methods. I am writing to let you know that the final six weeks will also be delivered remotely because of ongoing national and provincial measures in place to stop the transmission of COVID-19. Your safety is our number one priority. In some cases, your program may include some practical, experiential or lab/shop related activities. We are working with the provincial government and public health authorities to establish a plan for delivering these components later this summer. We will keep you informed as these plans are confirmed.

Taking a Spring semester program was a smart choice. While Canada continues to self-isolate, you are earning new, marketable skills and credentials, which will help you launch, advance or change careers when we emerge from this pandemic. If you are continuing your studies at Loyalist this Fall, Loyalist will offer blended program delivery including a combination of in-person classes for some programs, as permitted by health care officials, and robust remote delivery for other programs.

These are interim measures until it’s safe for us all to return to campus.

If you are an international student, you’re still eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) even though in-class courses have been moved to an online-only format because of COVID-19. If you have a study permit, or been approved for a study permit for a program starting Spring, Summer or Fall, but you can’t travel to Canada at this time due to travel restrictions, you’re also still eligible for the PGWPP.

We know these last few months have been incredibly difficult – and we’re here for you. I encourage you to take advantage of our enhanced online Student Success services, including access to mentors, study assistance and counselling. The caring learning environment at Loyalist continues, regardless of how or where it’s delivered. Your faculty, staff and fellow students care personally about you and your success. We’re here to provide you with the most supportive post-secondary education experience possible.

If you have questions or require clarification, please contact your program faculty members or Dean.

SUBJECT: $700,000 in Needs-Based Financial Assistance for Returning Loyalist Students
DATE: May 11, 2020

Dear Students,

We’ve been through a lot together, and I can’t thank you enough for your resourcefulness and perseverance. We understand the financial hardships brought on by COVID-19 and while there is funding from the Government of Canada, we know that for many, this is a very difficult time.

To help address the financial strain and to make it possible for you to return to Loyalist in the Fall, and to successfully complete your program, Loyalist has allocated $1M to provide students with needs-based financial assistance, required now more than ever as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We shared this good news today through a news release to the College community and regional media agencies.

A $700,000 fund will help qualified returning domestic and international students pay for their Loyalist education with a one-time bursary of up to $1,000 toward the cost of tuition.

Loyalist Student Government, on behalf of its student members, has donated $300,000 to the fund. Thank you to Loyalist Student Government and the generosity of all student members who are helping each other continue their studies despite severe financial hardships brought about by COVID-19.

To apply for needs-based financial assistance, please log in to your myLoyalist account and select the Awards and Bursary Application $ icon. Once there, please follow the instructions within the application.

You may be wondering what learning at Loyalist will look like in September. Please know that we are moving toward resuming in-person learning as soon as we can. Currently, our teams are developing program plans based on a few different gradual reopening scenarios, including smaller classes. We are also putting enhanced programs and services in place to give you every possible support. We will keep you posted as reopening plans evolve.

We continue to work closely with our Public Health partners to strategically plan various return-to-work scenarios to protect the health of our College community as we slowly and carefully emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

On behalf of all of us at Loyalist, thank you. We are here to help you succeed. I encourage you to stay connected to the College during the summer, and we look forward to welcoming you back to Loyalist in the Fall!

SUBJECT: #COVID19Kindness: Loyalist College Culinary Faculty & Students Support Local Food Security Efforts
DATE: April 23, 2020

Dear College Community,

We know we’re stronger together. Not only as an institution, but as a community, region, province and country. Our #COVID19Kindness stories speak to the power of our collective strength.

Food security is a daily struggle for many in the Bay of Quinte region and it has since amplified as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Chef Albert Ponzo, faculty in Loyalist’s Culinary Skills and Culinary Management programs, and two Culinary students, Courtney Gaudet and Noah Rudderham, have stepped up to support food security efforts. In collaboration with Food to Share, a Prince Edward County-based organization that collects locally grown produce, Chef Ponzo and team create healthy meals that are delivered to local food banks and families in need. Please take a moment to read this story about their incredible contributions. If you have a story you would like to share, please contact marcom@loyalistcollege.com.

Thank you to Chef Ponzo, our remarkable students, and every Loyalist College employee who uses their talents – parts of our collective strength – to help those who need it most.

 Sincerely,

Ann Marie

SUBJECT: #COVID19Kindness: Paramedic Faculty, Bancroft Campus and Practical Nursing Student
DATE: April 9, 2020

Good afternoon,

Before we head into the long weekend, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for another exceptional week. I’m truly honoured to be a part of Team Loyalist. We’re on this journey together, pushing forward and making the best of this situation. I really believe that we are stronger together. This week’s #COVID19Kindness stories speak to just that.

Erin Bons & Ben Potts, Paramedic Faculty
In addition to being faculty at Loyalist, Erin Bons and Ben Potts work with Hastings Quinte Paramedic Services. They have seen a shift in how PPE is used by paramedics in pandemic times. We are truly thankful to Erin and Ben, and all of our Paramedic faculty, who are supporting our community.

To meet a province-wide need for more emergency service workers, Loyalist graduated 19 Paramedic students last week who met their program requirements. Fifty percent have already been hired by a paramedic service. Congratulations on your success! We know how focused and how hard you have worked to complete your studies. On behalf of the College, I wish you allthe best with your bright careers.

Bancroft Campus Donates PPE
Our community continues to find ways to support local health care workers at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic. The College’s Bancroft campus contributed to Loyalist’s initial donation of 58,282 supplies to QHC on March 23 by providing personal protective equipment (PPE) from their Paramedic program. On Friday, March 27, faculty and staff at our Bancroft campus donated masks, shoe covers, gloves, gowns, caps, protective glasses, sanitizer, and 174 N95 respirators, to Quinte Health Care (QHC) North Hastings Hospital. Donations were sourced from the College’s Personal Support Worker program. Thank you to Warren Gee, Director, Bancroft Campus and Employment Ontario Programs; Lisa Walker, Office Coordinator; Rebecca Hicks, Admissions/Records Officer; and all faculty and staff in Bancroft.

Carmen Pham, Practical Nursing Student

Leading Seaman Carmen Pham, a Loyalist College Practical Nursing student, was featured in the Belleville Intelligencer today. In the article, Carmen talks about her love of military and nursing, and how she’s on standby to serve“I’ve been notified that I could be deployed at any time as part of the military’s domestic response,” she said. “My faculty at Loyalist are very supportive and are ready to make any accommodations necessary to help me succeed. When I joined the Navy three years ago I never imagined this situation. I’m ready to help out in the community as needed.” We are extremely proud of Carmen, and all of our caring and supportive students.

I hope you enjoyed reading this week’s stories. We know many in our community are helping out and making a difference. If you have a story you would like to share, please contact marcom@loyalistcollege.com.

Thank you, once again, for being amazing faculty, staff and students. I wish each and every one of you a fantastic long weekend, and I hope you take some time to connect with your friends, family and loved ones.

Sincerely,

Ann Marie

SUBJECT: COVID-19: Final Marks, Tuition, Ancillary Fees and Parking Permits
DATE: April 9, 2020

Dear Students,

Over the last few weeks you’ve been challenged to make changes to your regular routines, adapt to a new way of learning and find meaningful ways to connect with your peers, faculty, family and friends, all while internalizing the impact COVID-19 is having on our community, province and country. I am so proud of your continued perseverance and personal strength during these difficult and confusing times.

This situation is far from normal and the circumstances are not ideal. We know that remote and alternate delivery methods may not align with the needs of every learner, and this adjustment has been difficult for many. This – truly – was our only feasible option to provide you with any chance of completing the academic year in a timely manner, an important goal for all students and definitely a crucial one for our prospective 2020 graduates in their final year of study. We are most grateful to the incredible faculty and staff at Loyalist College who made this rapid transition to support you through this semester.

Rest assured that we’ve heard your concerns and this has led to new flexibility in grading which we hope will ease any concerns you may have.

Final Marks

Your final mark will be determined based on the marking rubric set out in your course outline. Given the special circumstances for the Winter 2020 semester, professors may recommend an alternative approach. Here are the four options, which you can consider in consultation with your professor:

  1. To accept the final course grade assigned by your professor upon the completion plan and a letter grade according to normal College procedures. This will either be as of April 17, 2020 or April 24, 2020.
  2. For those students passing as of March 13, 2020, but who have faced difficulties with their studies, your faculty member may award Aegrotat “AG” standing. This is a course credit provided in exceptional circumstances whereby a student may demonstrate satisfactory performance without being able to complete all course/program requirements due to extenuating personal hardship.
  3. Students who do not have a passing grade as of March 13, 2020 and are ineligible for Aegrotat standing and were unable to follow the completion plan due to medical, financial, technological or other extenuating circumstances can receive an IP grade (In-Progress) until such time that the College can resume normal activities. At that time the student will be required to complete an appropriate assignment, set of experiential exercises or exam that will assess all outstanding outcomes.
  4. Students in full-time on-campus programs who have indicated difficultly with online delivery are permitted to withdraw from at-risk courses, backdated to March 6, without academic penalty. This is administered on a case-by-case basis and subject to Dean approval. Please note that students who elect this option are to be aware of and review any potential implications to study permits and/or OSAP requirements. For inquiries related to your study permits please contact international@loyalistcollege.com. For inquiries related to OSAP requirements please contact financialaidoffice@loyalistcollege.com. If you voluntarily withdraw from your courses, you may re-take your courses free-of-charge at a later date. Note: This provision does not apply to students taking courses and/or programs through Distance or Continuing Education.

Students in accredited/regulated or distance  programs are governed by separate completion options; they will be shared with these groups directly by their program coordinators. Please continue to engage fully in your studies as previously planned.

Tuition
Faculty and staff members have done an exceptional job, adapting quickly to deliver their programs and services through online and alternative methods that have allowed students to continue their programs from remote locations. They continue to develop solutions to support the delivery of learning experiences that would normally require face-to-face interactions, such as labs.

While this isn’t what any of us expected, we are confident you will have the opportunity to successfully complete your semester. As such, we will not be changing our tuition policy for this year and will not be offering tuition refunds or rebates.

Ancillary Fees
To help address a portion of the financial burden that we know you are experiencing as a result of the pandemic, we are providing refunds on the following Winter student ancillary fees on a prorated basis from March 15 – April 30, 2020:

  • Student Centre
  • Student Fitness Centre
  • Campus Recreation
  • Lockers
  • Wellness Services
  • Student Entertainment

If you are a returning student, these fees will be credited to your account and used for future charges. If you are a graduating or non-returning student, a cheque will be mailed to your permanent address.

Parking Permits
Another way we are providing support is by providing refunds on all parking passes, on a prorated basis, for the month of April. Anyone who paid electronically by credit card will receive a credit on their method of payment. If you paid by any other method, a cheque will be mailed to the permanent address listed in the College’s Banner system.

We will continue to do everything we can to ensure you have access to the support you need to successfully complete your semester.

The magnitude of what we are experiencing has not been seen in your lifetime.  You are rising to the challenge. I want you to know if you are having challenges in doing so, you are not alone; this is an incredibly difficult time. Please reach out to us if you need any support. General inquiries can be directed to studentsuccess@loyalistcollege.com. Support is also available through Good2Talk: 1-866-925-5454 and the Crisis Text Line: Text GOOD2TALKON to 686868.

As your President and a proud Loyalist Lancer, I am so immensely proud of every one of you.

I hope you and your families are well.

Sincerely,

Ann Marie

SUBJECT: COVID-19: Postponement of Convocation
DATE: April 3, 2020

To our graduating students and all members of the Loyalist community,

It is with great disappointment that I inform you that Loyalist’s June Convocation Ceremonies will be postponed.

This was an incredibly difficult decision as this joyous event is an annual highlight during which family, friends, College employees, members of the Loyalist Board of Governors and special guests come together to celebrate the dedication, hard work and achievements of our students. In particular, we recognize how disappointing this news is for our graduating students.

Please know that this decision was made with the best interests of our community at heart as we continue to respond to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic.

Loyalist looks forward to hosting the Convocation Ceremonies at a future date and will communicate further details with you once available. We are committed to ensuring that all graduates have an opportunity to celebrate this important milestone with family, friends and faculty whose support was so integral to their post-secondary journey.

Graduates, I want to thank each of you for the tremendous contributions that you have brought to Loyalist College.  Every day, I am inspired by the acts of kindness, leadership and support that you bring to each other and the wider community. We are very proud of you and promise that we will provide you with a venue to celebrate once we are all in a safe environment.

Students, please be assured that while we are postponing our in-person celebrations, you will still receive your certificates and diplomas.

I thank you all for your support and patience during these challenging and uncertain times. I thank you for choosing Loyalist College for this part of your journey – the College is a better place because of it!

Sincerely,

Ann Marie

SUBJECT: #COVID19Kindness: Loyalist faculty make face shields for local COVID-19 workers
DATE: April 2, 2020

Dear Colleagues,

Faculty, staff, students and graduates from our caring College community continue to go above and beyond to provide support to those in need during COVID-19. There are many instances of this throughout Team Loyalist, of which we are most proud.

Our latest story highlights Jeremy and Suzanne Braithwaite, two Loyalist graduates who are also faculty. Jeremy teaches in the School of Applied Science, Skills and Technology, and supports the College’s Weston Family Scholarship in the Skilled Trades. Suzanne is the coordinator of the College’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

When Jeremy and Suzanne learned of a global face shield shortage impacting the Bay of Quinte region, they combined their skills and developed a prototype that could be made locally to protect health care professionals on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic. Quinte Health Care (QHC) approved their design, and within two days the Braithwaites made 500 face shields for QHC. They are working with other members in the community to produce and deliver more face shields in the coming weeks. You can read the full story here.

We will be sharing more wonderful stories with you on the College’s #COVID19Kindness web page. If you have a story to share, please contact our Marketing & Communications team at marcom@loyalistcollege.com

Thank you, once again, for making a difference in the lives of so many.

Sincerely,

Ann Marie

SUBJECT: COVID-19: Spring Semester Start Delayed Until May 19
DATE: March 30, 2020

Dear College Community members,

As a result of disruptions arising from COVID-19, we are delaying the start of the 2020 Spring semester until Tuesday, May 19, two weeks later than planned. The new 12-week Spring semester will end by Friday, August 7 as previously scheduled. Grades will be submitted by Tuesday, August 11 by 9 pm.

Classes will be delivered through online and alternative delivery methods for the first six weeks, and possibly beyond, depending on the status of evolving national and provincial measures in place to stop the spread of the Novel Coronavirus.

The delayed start will ensure that faculty and students have the time they need to prepare for this alternative delivery, ensure program outcomes are met and maximize our ability to offer a personalized approach, individualized feedback for students and peer-to-peer collaboration.

I want to acknowledge the creativity, flexibility and collegiality that everyone – students, faculty, staff and our partners in the community – is showing as we navigate these uncharted waters. We are so impressed by your optimism in adapting to COVID-19 challenges. Please know that your safety and the academic success of our students are of paramount importance in every decision we make. Thank you for your patience, and thanks to our faculty and staff who are working from home to ensure student success and to prepare for our May intake.

While it is too soon to know when Loyalist will re-open, we look forward to the time when we resume in-person classes. It’s the hands-on empowered learning experiences and vibrant student life, which are central to our Destination College experience. The focus on student success is evident even when we are away from campus, as so much of what makes Loyalist unique resides in the people who continue their focus on your success so you can reach your goals.

Sincerely,

Ann Marie

SUBJECT: COVID-19: Labs, Shops, Studio Instruction and Placements Suspended
DATE: March 25, 2020

Dear College Community,

I hope you and your loved ones are well and staying safe in self-isolation. Through these regular communications, I intend to keep you connected to the College and informed about the actions we are taking to continue to support you during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Classes resumed Monday, March 23, through online and alternative delivery methods, with an aim to help students finish their winter semester on time. While classes are being taught in a different way until the end of semester, April 17, students are still working toward the same learning outcomes and will continue to have interaction with faculty and peers, collaborative learning, feedback on assignments, and assessments. Delivery of online courses and services continues as planned.

New Updates:

  • All labs, shops, studio instruction and placements have been suspended until the end of the semester, April 17. This is an extension of the March 31 date previously posted. Instead of in-person experiential-based learning, we are looking to develop applied projects that meet learning outcomes; identify placements that can be completed remotely; creative lab completion through live streaming demonstrations, virtual simulations and case study engagement; and seek opportunities for final semester students to gain immediate related employment in essential fields (i.e. PMED, NURS and OTPTA), if permitted by WSIB and the regulating bodies.
  • For students in the final semester of their program, remote capstone experiences and projects will be most important. Those returning in the fall may have the option to spend the first week completing open labs and program ‘boot camps,’ which will offer compressed delivery of some elements of this semester’s curriculum. As we determine next steps for your program, we will communicate directly with you in the coming days. Students are encouraged to visit loyalistcollege.com/coronavirus regularly and to check their email and Blackboard for program-specific updates. If you have concerns or require clarification, please contact your program faculty members or Dean.
  • Hotel accommodations for student residents with no alternative accommodation will be extended to April 17. Residence will remain closed for the semester. Those students who moved out of Residence for the short term to family or friends but who do not have the option to continue living in their temporary accommodations should contact residence@loyalistcollege.com. For those residents looking to pick up their personal belongings, arrangements can be made directly with the Residence team when the province is no longer in a state of emergency.
  • Student services, including Student Success, the Health Centre, Career Services, Library Services, IT Services and Student Government, continue to be available remotely through email, phone or online.
  • For the small number of students who do not have access to internet or a computer, necessary for the completion of your programs, the SAL remains open on a very limited basis where physical distancing is in effect. Please advise your Dean if you do not have access to a computer, required for your online studies.
  • While Ontario remains in a state of emergency, the majority of our employees continue to work from home and practice physical distancing. Unless authorized to do so, employees should not come to campus for any reason.

As with all of our general updates, we are mindful that every student is unique, every program has different opportunities and challenges associated with new online and alternative delivery methods. As a small, nimble College with exceptional, caring faculty, we are responding to students’ individual needs and facilitating high-quality education that will prepare them for success in a different world of work. As we adapt to new realities, ensuring student success is our priority.

I know this has been a challenging time. Developments are changing by the hour and it is difficult to plan. Please know that your health and well-being, and that of our community has been at the forefront of all decisions. We remain committed to supporting you through this. We will support you by supporting each other. We will get through this together!

Thank you for all of your hard work, responsiveness, patience and resiliency, as we collaborate and support each other through this unprecedented time.

Sincerely,

Ann Marie

SUBJECT: COVID-19: Loyalist College Delivers Personal Protective Equipment to Quinte Health Care
DATE: March 24, 2020

Dear College Community,

As you may be aware, there is a national shortage of health care supplies and personal protective equipment as frontline health care workers test overwhelming numbers of people for COVID-19 and care for patients.

Amid growing concerns about dwindling stocks of supplies, the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) and the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) are urging governments and organizations who have supplies to repurpose them for frontline health care use.

Quinte Health Care has advised us that they urgently need personal protective equipment. Loyalist faculty and staff answered the call and donated a variety of College items from programs and simulation labs to keep frontline workers safe. This includes more than 16 bags of hand sanitizer, 500 isolation gowns, 25,200 latex-free non-sterile gloves, 31,000 Nitrile gloves, 20 N95 1860 respirators, 20 N95 1870 respirators, Sensicare sterile gloves, 125 shield face masks, 1,050 surgical face masks (loop), 250 surgical face masks (tie) and one container of Virox wipes, for a total donation of 58,282 supplies.

Dedicated staff and faculty across the College’s three Schools quickly mobilized to respond to this emergent need. They assessed our resources across various program areas and worked together to meet the demand.

Loyalist College Simulation Laboratory Specialists Todd Bandy (above) and Bethany Jones delivered supplies to Quinte Health Care on Monday, March 23, 2020.

While physical resources are essential, so are health human resources. We are proud of our faculty, staff and students who are working hard to keep us safe.

When we lead with our hearts, remarkable acts of kindness and generosity ensue. I continue to be inspired by the depth of care and compassion within our community and everything you do to support others in this unprecedented time of need.

Sincerely,

Ann Marie

SUBJECT: COVID-19: Update on Online and Alternative Delivery Methods
DATE: March 23, 2020

Dear Students,

We understand that these are difficult and rapidly changing times, and I want to assure you that we are here for you and are committed to your success.

Our goal is to protect our College community while maintaining continuity of program delivery.

I am writing today to provide you with some important updates and resources now that classes have resumed, as of today, through online and alternative delivery formats.

As you are aware, all in-person classes are suspended until the end of the semester, April 17. Last week, the faculty and the College worked to prepare remote and alternate delivery methods for on-campus programming with an aim to help as many students as possible finish their winter semester on time.

By now, you should have received an email from your School and/or program faculty with specific details for the continuation of your program.

Schools are in the process of developing plans for any required practical components such as labs, clinical and placements. Details and contingency plans will be shared with you in the coming days.

If you are unable to engage in alternative delivery methods for classes and/or practical course components, a different plan will be provided, but as a result, it may not be possible for you to finish your semester at the same time as your peers.

Online courses and programs are continuing as scheduled. Any required changes will be communicated within your courses and/or through the community hub.

We understand that the transition to online and alternative delivery is not simple and there may be a number of challenges. We are here to help find solutions and provide the support you need to complete your studies. Adjusting to online and alternative course delivery will take time and patience.

Below are tips and a list of support resources available to you:

  • Read all communications from your School/program faculty so that you understand how to access your classes/coursework remotely.
  • If you have questions about your online/alternative classes, contact your program faculty.
  • If you experience problems accessing Blackboard, your College email, or other Loyalist technologies, please contact servicedesk@loyalistcollege.com or 613-969-1913, ext. 2420 for assistance (Monday through Friday, 7:30 am – 4:30 pm).
  • If you require academic supports, our AccessAbility team and Student Success Mentors are available. You can contact staff directly, or email studentsuccess@loyalistcollege.com for a referral.
  • If you need tutoring, writing or English-language support, please contact eproulx@loyalistcollege.com for a referral.
  • We can all benefit from supports during these uncertain times. Various counselling resources are available here.

I would like to thank our committed and professional team who has been working tirelessly to ensure a smooth transition to online and alternative delivery methods. I am so proud of what you have accomplished in such a short period of time, and I look forward to highlighting examples of your successes in the coming week.

A big thank you to you, our students, for your adaptability and hard work ethic as you proceed with the semester through new methods to achieve the learning outcomes of your program.

Sincerely,

Ann Marie

SUBJECT: COVID-19: College Community Update on Loyalist Student Residents
DATE: March 20, 2020

Dear College Community,

Fortunately, we continue to have no confirmed cases of COVID-19 connected to the College. However, the threat of contracting the Novel Coronavirus unfortunately continues to grow along with confirmed and suspected cases in our region. Our first priority is to keep everyone safe by proactively mitigating its transmission and helping to ‘flatten the curve’ of its spread.

As of Tuesday, March 17, the day after we suspended all non-essential College services, we have been encouraging our student residents to move out for their safety and the safety of all residents and College employees.

This decision is based entirely on the advice of health care professionals who best understand the severity and implications of the COVID-19 situation. An outbreak in Residence would lead to mass quarantine and could be a grave situation. By Wednesday, when we still had more than 500 students in Residence, we needed to escalate the urgency and require students to move out by this afternoon at 3 pm. We are grateful to those students who quickly found alternative arrangements and to their families and friends who rallied together to help them move out. In addition, approximately 40 students with extenuating circumstances have received approval to move out through the weekend.

Close to 200 student residents who have no family or friends with whom to temporarily stay will be accommodated in local hotels at no cost until March 31. In hotel rooms, students will be able to practice social distancing. There will be College Resident Assistants within the hotels to provide direction and advice, as required. This was not possible in Residence, which is configured for communal living and houses up to 12 students in some units. We could not keep students safe there.

We understand this is a very stressful time for all students, especially residents who have the additional responsibilities associated with moving out. We empathize, apologize for the inconvenience, and take comfort knowing that they will be safer in self-isolation within homes of family and friends, as well as in rooms within different local hotels. If you have any questions, please contact marcom@loyalistcollege.com so that we may assist.

We care about our students and are here to support them throughout this move and beyond. Thank you for your patience, perseverance and positive outlook during this trying time.

Sincerely,

Ann Marie

SUBJECT: COVID-19: Placements/Clinicals Suspended
DATE: March 17, 2020

Good afternoon,

To ensure students’ safety given the spread of COVID-19, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to suspend placements/clinicals for the remainder of the semester. In addition to health precautions, the WSIB (Workplace Insurance Safety Board) will not confirm coverage for any placements given the current circumstances as of today.

Placements/clinicals will resume as early as possible in collaboration with our community partners and their schedules. As we know more details, we will share them with you for your future planning. We understand this is a challenging time of many uncertainties, but we are steadfast in our commitment to providing students with quality workplace experiences to complete their learning outcomes.

Thank you for your understanding,

Ann Marie

DATE: March 17, 2020

Dear Students,

We are living in an unprecedented time.  I want to assure you that we are here for you.

As you know we are moving to a limited use of our facilities from now to March 31.  We are requesting that if you are able to move out of Residence to family we encourage you to do so. Why? It’s because we want to encourage social distancing.  We are working through the advice of health care professionals who advise that if we can limit the number of students in Residence then we should make arrangements to do so.  However, if you cannot move we certainly understand and we want you to know that we are here to support you.  If we have a case of COVID 19 in residence then we must move from isolation to quarantine and that will be of every person that person has come in contact with.  What that means is that your suite or even larger may need to move to quarantine.  Rest assured that even in this scenario we will support you.

The Commons will remain open.  We will be limiting numbers to less than 50 people.  Food services will continue with hours as posted in the Residence Commons

There will be no entry to residence from anyone outside of residence.

Over the next two weeks we will be limiting access to the Kente Building.  Access to the building will be provided to residence students through the 1L38 doorway.  You will need to sign in at the front desk, please bring any photo ID with you. If you don’t have a student ID that’s ok as security will look you up in our system. The SAL will be open as well as study spaces.  Classrooms will be locked.  This will be to ensure that our cleaning services are focused on areas that students need as we move to alternative delivery of our programs.

Health Services, Counselling and Career Services will be available as per the message that I released to the college community.

If you chose to move home for the next two weeks please ensure that you formally notify residence staff as we will be checking in with residents periodically.  For those students who will be returning to Residence after classes resume, if their program extends past the contract end date, they will not be charged any additional Residence fees.

Please keep in touch with each other – be kind – be patient.  Our staff is doing everything they can to support you.  Staff from other units at the college have reached out to provide extra supports during this time. My sincere thanks to the amazing college team of professionals who are completely focused on student success.

We will get through this together.  These are challenging times and I want to personally assure you that everyone at Loyalist College is here to ensure your health and well-being during this time.

Sincerely,

Ann Marie

SUBJECT: Important Updates for the Loyalist College Community – COVID-19
DATE:       March 16, 2020

Dear College Community,

While there are currently no confirmed cases of COVID-19 connected to Loyalist College, we are taking the advice of Public Health officials and our Student Health Centre team to help ‘flatten the curve’ of the Novel Coronavirus spread and proactively mitigate its rate of transmission. Please find an update below on our latest preventative measures:

All Non-Essential College Services Suspended

Starting today until March 31, we are suspending all non-essential services.

This includes:

  • All labs, shops, Dining Hall, Health Centre, Student Success, Career Services, student spaces, Library, Bookstore, Spa, etc.
  • Students are asked to continue working on your programs remotely, and not come to the College.
  • To reduce pressure for our employees, effective immediately, we are asking them to work from home, unless their work on campus is required to support alternate delivery of academic programs and keeping basic operating functions going.
  • We will continue to provide updates on the status of this suspension, and provide two or three days’ advance notice before services resume.
  • As of tomorrow morning, everyone who enters the College will be required to sign in and out. Students will need to show their Student ID. Please do not come to campus if you are feeling ill or have been exposed to someone who has recently travelled or is sick.
  • Access within the College will be restricted with limited entrances, for short-term access.
  • Residence will be limited to student residents only. We encourage all students who are able to do so, to move home during this time. More Residence-specific information will be communicated to residents shortly.

Access Student Health, Success and Career Services Remotely

Student Health Services, Student Success Services and Student Career Services will continue to be offered to students through email, phone and online:

Student Health Centre:

  • If you have a medical concern and do not have a family physician, please call the Health Centre at 613-969-1913, ext. 2374 to be directed to one of our nurses. They will screen your concern and determine whether it is essential to be assessed in person or by a physician. If so, you will be offered a phone consultation with Dr. Steinitz at a scheduled time. If it is deemed an in-person appointment is necessary, one will be scheduled and you will be asked to wait in your car, Residence or quiet area alone until you are called or texted that the team is ready for you to come to the Student Health Centre. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us reduce non-essential visits at this time.
  • The Government of Ontario has provided helpful suggestions for self-assessing whether you may have COVID-19 and other options for accessing health care.
  • Student Success Services
  •  To book Counselling, Mentor, and AccessAbility appointments, contact Student Success at 613-969-1913; ext. 2519 or studentsuccess@loyalistcollege.com.
  • If you have a scheduled appointment, it will continue via the phone. Contact Student Success to confirm your contact information.
  • For new Peer Tutoring requests, complete this online form.
  • For students already matched with Peer Tutors, contact your tutor directly to discuss options and availability.
  • For Faculty Writing Coach and English Language Support sessions, contact eproulx@loyalistcollege.com.

Career Services

  • To make an appointment with Career Services, call 613-969-1913 ext. 2438 or email careers@loyalistcollege.com.
  • If you have an appointment, please call at the scheduled time or to reschedule.
  • Through the Career Centre website, virtual Interview Stream software is accessible to you anytime and all of the Career Development Certificate program presentations and modules are online and attached to LinkedIn Learning modules.

Classes via Online and Alternative Delivery Methods

  • As previously mentioned, all classes will continue through online and alternative delivery methods starting on or before Monday, March 23.
  • This week you will receive an email from your school with specific details for your program.
  • All online courses are continuing as scheduled.
  • If you are unable to engage in alternative delivery methods for classes and/or placements/labs, a different plan will be provided, but as a result, it may not be possible for you to finish your semester at the same time as your peers.

Placements and Clinicals

  • At this time placement and clinicals are continuing as planned unless cancelled by the agency or host. Students who feel unwell should exercise the same abundance of caution as they would do in any other circumstance.
  • Students who do not wish to proceed with their placement will be provided with the option of removing themselves from the placement and resuming their clinical/ placement course at a later date that is agreeable to the placement site schedule. The College cannot however guarantee at his time when that placement will occur.

Avoid Non-Essential Travel

  • To limit the spread of COVID-19, the Government of Canada advises you to avoid non-essential travel outside of Canada until further notice.
  • It is critical for all students, employees and contractors to self-isolate for 14 days if you return from travel outside of Canada.
  • Call the Student Health Centre at ext. 2374 to let them know you are self-isolating.

I would like to thank our committed and professional team who has been working tirelessly to respond to this global pandemic as we balance quality education with the protection of our College community.  Loyalist is committed to ensuring the academic integrity and continuity of our programs despite the uncertainty and challenges of the COVID-19 epidemic. We will continue to keep you up-to-date with emails and through loyalistcollege.com

Thank you for your patience and perseverance.

SUBJECT: COVID-19: Important Updates for the Loyalist College Community
DATE:       March 13, 2020

Good afternoon,

The health, well-being and safety of our Loyalist College community is always our top priority. These are difficult and rapidly shifting times, and I am writing today to provide an important update regarding the College’s evolving response to COVID-19 and how it impacts campus services and our teaching and learning environment.

Please see below important updates for the Loyalist College Community:

  • Loyalist College’s Belleville, Bancroft and Brunel campuses will remain open. Core College functions and facilities, including Residence, the Dining Hall, Student Access Lab, The Parrott Centre Library and the Loyalist Student Health Centre, among other services, will operate as usual.
  • In-person classes will be suspended as of Monday, March 16 until the end of the semester, April 17; however, teaching will resume via a range of online and alternative delivery methods by Monday, March 23, if not earlier, depending on your program. During the next week, faculty members will prepare course content for this transition.
  • Schools will share specific details for each program by next Friday, March 20. Not all program delivery will be the same.
  • Any changes to labs or apprenticeship will also be communicated to students through their School by next Friday, March 20. Where possible, these will be staggered to allow “social distancing” in smaller groups.
  • Modifications to students’ placement schedules will be determined by the placement host and in collaboration with faculty members.
  • On-campus events will be cancelled until the end of the semester.

Our objective is to protect you while maintaining continuity of program delivery. The steps above are being taken out of an abundance of caution and in an effort to reduce campus traffic and risk. We want to do our part in the fight against COVID-19 at Loyalist, and in our Bay of Quinte community. Through social distancing, as recommended by Ontario public health authorities, we aim to interrupt the chain of transmission and protect vulnerable populations. This effort will also assist in reducing strain on our local health care providers.

Additional details about these changes will be available for students and the College community on the College’s main COVID-19 web page. We will continue to post FAQs and other important information as we navigate these uncharted waters. Please forward any questions not answered by the College’s COVID-19 web page to marcom@loyalistcollege.com.

On a personal note, I want to thank our Loyalist faculty and staff who have invested significant time and energy to ensure we are best prepared. You go above and beyond to support our community and do so with composure, empathy and sincerity. Your commitment to the success of our students is admirable.

To our students: We realize that this is a very stressful and difficult time for you. Please be assured that the academic integrity of your program will be maintained, and that plans will be flexible for program continuity. Thank you for your thoughtful questions and helpful suggestions. As this situation continues to evolve, and the decisions we make increase with complexity, please know that your health and safety is my top priority. Adversity is challenging, and I know our caring, supportive community will get through this together.

Please be assured that I will continue to keep you informed about new developments and procedures as they arise.

Yours sincerely,

Ann Marie Vaughan

SUBJECT:  COVID-19 Precautions: All On-Campus Events Cancelled Until March 31
DATE:        March 12, 2020

Good afternoon,

While the risk of COVID-19 infection continues to be low in our region, we have made the difficult but prudent decision in collaboration with Hastings Prince Edward Public Health to cancel all non-academic, academic and community events scheduled to be held on campus between now and Tuesday, March 31.

Resto 213, the Loyalist Market and The Spa will suspend their services during this time.

We must do our part to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Reducing activity on campus will help to protect our Loyalist community and our safe teaching and learning environment.

All classes will continue as planned. We remain in communication with public health.

In looking ahead at College events planned for this spring, such as Convocation on June 10, 11, and 12, please keep in mind the importance of booking refundable travel and accommodations in the event that the ceremonies are cancelled due to the COVID-19 situation. Please also speak with your insurance company to understand the terms of your coverage.

Please continue to visit loyalistcollege.com/coronavirus for updates.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this evolving situation together.

SUBJECT:  COVID-19: March Break Travel Considerations
DATE:        March 12, 2020

Good afternoon,

As you may be aware, Public Health officials in Ontario are warning families about March Break travel plans next week, as efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 continue.

While the federal government has issued a travel advisory with a growing list of several countries, there are many destinations with COVID-19 cases that are not on the list. For example, Florida, New York and Washington have been declared states of emergency because of COVID-19.

In light of the spread of the Novel Coronavirus, please carefully consider your March Break travel plans, even within Ontario.

Any student, employee or contractor returning from a Level 3 country or region is required to undergo the mandatory period of self-isolation as directed by the Government of Canada. During this period, you should not come on campus.

Even if you visit a region that is not on this list, please consider self-quarantine, as required, and monitor your health carefully for 14 days after returning home.

As the list of countries is increasing, be aware that conditions may be different by the time you return.

Our top priority is to keep you safe and protect the well-being of our entire College community.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Ann Marie Vaughan
President & CEO
Loyalist College

SUBJECT:  Update and Information Novel Coronavirus – COVID-19
DATE:        March 11, 2020

Dear Students,

Given the slowly but steadily rising number of COVID-19 cases in Canada, I am reaching out again to reassure you that Loyalist College is closely monitoring the situation in collaboration with our health agency partners, and developing action plans should they be required.

While there are a number of cases in Ontario, health officials continue to stress that the risk posed by the Novel Coronavirus is low in our province and region. Yesterday, members of the College executive team participated in an Ontario government call with Dr. David Williams, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, who explained that more than 80% of COVID-19 cases are mild, and there are currently no community transmissions in the province.

All classes, placements, operations and College activities continue as scheduled. Should circumstances change, we will respond appropriately under the direction of Public Health, and advise the College community promptly. While community quarantine is unlikely, in the remote event that public health officials introduce social distancing to help stop the spread of the disease, we will use online technologies wherever possible to enable you to continue your education with minimal interruptions. Plans for placements will also be adjusted, as necessary, for completion.

Your health and the safety of our College community are of the utmost importance.

Throughout our campus, you may have noticed a number of preventative measures, introduced for your safety, including:

  • Additional onsite cleaning, with staff wiping down critical touchpoints throughout the day;
  • Increased number of hand sanitizer stations;
  • Disinfectant wipes in regularly used classrooms and labs;
  • Hand washing guidelines in washrooms throughout campus;
  • Well stocked critical cleaning products such as wipes, replacement hand sanitizer solution, masks, gloves, and soap; and
  • Regularly updated Loyalist awareness campaign, with information also available in the ‘announcements’ section of your myloyalist.com student portal.

I understand that as this situation unfolds in the media, concerns for your health and the health of your loved ones may lead to a wide range of thoughts and feelings, such as stress and anxiety. I encourage you to seek accurate information and stay connected – but consider setting limits around social media and news. Remember, we are here to help and, if needed, the College offers free, short-term, confidential counselling services

Maintaining your day-to-day activities and routine is recommended, unless you are feeling unwell. To prevent contracting or spreading illness, please follow these best practices:

  • Stay home if you are sick, or if those with whom you live are sick, and avoid contact with other people until symptoms are gone;
  • Wash your hands frequently;
  • Get your influenza vaccine, if you have not already;
  • Cough and sneeze into the bend of your arm, not into your hand;
  • Avoid touching your nose, mouth or eyes with your hands;
  • Clean and disinfect high-touch objects and surfaces, such as doorknobs, phones and television remotes;
  • Eat healthy foods and stay physically active to keep your immune system strong;
  • Get plenty of rest and sleep; and
  • Do not share water bottles, straws, eating utensils, toothbrushes, or anything else that has been in contact with saliva.

If you have flu-like or cold symptoms that persist, please wear a facemask and take the following direction:

  • If you are off campus, contact your health care provider.
  • If you are on campus, stay where you are, and phone the Loyalist Student Health Centre at 613-969-1913, ext. 2374. If the Centre is closed, call campus Security.
  • In the event of an emergency, contact 911 or go to the nearest hospital.

Please assess your personal health and connect with the appropriate health care provider listed below:

Hastings Prince Edward Public Health

If you are planning to travel, please consult the Government of Canada website for travel advice and advisories related to COVID-19.  Some countries have implemented travel bans.

Loyalist has cancelled all College-sanctioned employee and student travel for destinations that have been identified by the Government of Canada as affected by COVID-19.

The College will continue to follow direction of public health agencies in implementing further measures and determining next steps, as required. Since January, a working group of College employees and students have been meeting to monitor and discuss the evolving situation to ensure the College is well positioned to institute further measures and, if necessary, based on a well-developed Pandemic Plan (OHS-009).

Your well-being is a top priority and we encourage you to connect with your program faculty and Student Success team if you have any questions as they pertain to your studies or well-being.

SUBJECT:    2019 Novel Coronavirus
DATE:          January 29, 2020

Dear students,

We are reaching out to you today to address concerns regarding the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). The health and safety of our Loyalist College community is of the utmost importance and our health care teams are working with local, provincial and federal health agencies to stay up-to-date.

Yesterday afternoon the College participated in a Colleges Ontario teleconference hosted by Dr. David Williams, Chief Medical Officer of Health for the province of Ontario. Dr. Williams provided a verbal update on the emerging issue of the 2019 novel coronavirus and confirmed that we remain a low-risk area. He also advised citizens to be consistent in taking precautions.

Currently, there are no reported cases of the virus in our area and the assessed risk to Canadians overall is low.

As such, all classes, placements, operations and College activities will continue as scheduled. Should circumstances change, we will take appropriate action under the direction of Public Health, and advise the College community promptly.

We have implemented an awareness campaign to help the campus community be mindful of precautionary practices; introduced additional cleaning protocols in high-touch areas; and enhanced patient surveillance in the Loyalist Student Health Centre in accordance with public health requirements.

Hastings Prince Edward Public Health is in continuous contact with Public Health Ontario and the Ministry of Health to monitor the situation. They are working proactively with local health care providers, hospitals and schools to prepare for any potential cases, and to protect our community. They have launched a web page dedicated to providing updates about the virus and are committed to providing up-to-date information and guidance as soon as it becomes available.

Thank you in advance for contributing to our safe and healthy campus.
